blu, you got dots on your o...

Also, I'm working on something for this. The sync is a bitch, but the file seems to be turning out nicely. Also, 64ths.

So I lied with my last post, or at least didn't tell the whole truth, or something like that.

I just made another simfile for the next batch. 50 minutes from figuring out which song, to downloading to stepping. Which actually took a lot longer than it should have, but I spent some time with aesthetics. Anyways, I have another file for this.

ohohohohoho

you don't say that unless you're tsuka, you really don't

I rarely EVER play a file that is simple that I would prefer to an "artistic" file (I have to say artistic so everyone knows what I'm talking about but I also have to put quotes around it so people stop drama'ing)

I've always thought the no triples/quads thing was stupid and COMPLETELY restrictive, especially now that you can reconfigure keys, so I stopped stepping for ffr completely. maybe once this rule is abolished I'll make something. maybe

I've not played the whole batch, but so far, almost none of the files which tried to step as many sounds as possible were any good. The files that were the most fun and the best from a representative standpoint were the ones that didn't try so hard. I'm not saying that you can't make a file intensely layered fun and that every simple file is automatically good, it's just good advice to most of the people currently submitting to the batches.

we're not talking about stepping as many sounds as possible, because that rarely works and often results in dump disasters; it's more of layering certain aspects of a song that intertwine and such and can often result in a hand. in addition, 3+ sounds only sometimes result in a hand for me.

simplicity can be good depending on the song itself and the objective of the file; sometimes it's not.

also this is getting too :hands drama:

Actually, these two statements don't really go well together.

The best files are masterful at representing the song, and DO NOT try to step as many sounds as possible. The best files find the key pieces of the song that are worthy of stepping, that bring out the flavor and essence of the music, and effectively organizes it into patterns that are the best in representing that.

I never said that the best files stepped a lot of sounds, but they certainly aren't simple. And on top of all this, it still doesn't justify why we can't use triples/quads.

Get on AIM sometime, I need to send you my stepmania lectures. hehe

P.S. Patashu I need to stepmania train you -__-

rgh

lots of files have hands in 'em in the batch. because people want to use hands, they try to make every song really hard. so a lot of files end up ****ty.

one possible solution would be to allow hands no matter the difficulty. then you run into the issues that come with having files aimed at the average player with hands, which is the whole reason we have the rule now.

another solution is for people to stop trying so hard and just deal with not being able to use hands. not optimal for people who know what they're doing, but for the average ffr simauthor it's not a bad strategy. since tass is unlikely to bend the rule, this looks like a better option for now.

that's all I was trying to say, in a very poorly worded way

ok.

files without hands are boring

I'm totally serious

it's like playing a piano song that doesn't ever hit more than 2 notes at the same time

EDIT: here's another problem. ffr has gotten so used to pad-style "oldskool" stepping, that we have completely lost sight of what keyboard simulation is meant to be. we're not taking into consideration the fact that pad and keyboard playing is different, and will thus require drastically different styles. only when we understand this can we make good files, and only when we start making GOOD files, can the public understand as well.

you know how frustrating this is for me? do any of remember a time you tried to convince your friend about something? do any of you feel like mainstream culture is blinding everyone with trash? if you felt that before, or something similar to that, you know how frustrated I am.

Ffr is still years behind sm when it comes to files and its only been recently that files have improved so I'm pretty sure hands will eventually be allowed in lower difficulties
