No, but it's venting nuclear vapor. Or was. idk what the deal is now but Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was having the surrounding area evacuated while they tried to deliver a backup battery or fuel source to the plant. It's currently running under backup battery power but will/has run out in a few hours/a few hours ago.

Saw footage of the wave sweeping across land.

I thought this shit wasn't supposed to start happening until 2012

I don't believe in 2012, no matter how many earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hailstorms, sandstorms, zergling rushes, nuclear bombings hit.

If the nuclear plant started leaking radiation and somehow turned everyone there into a zombie, would you fly to Japan to kill them (except FFR members as long as they are cool with not eating you)?

Zombieland in Japan.

Nah, they said water does something something to counter something with the Nuclear Power Plant... their cooling system failed apparently (as I remember)

As for here in cali, we got like a two foot wave as the remnants of the Tsunami, still my best prayers to those in danger, mother nature must've had her period today. :\
I like how you speak for the entire California coast. You observed a 2 foot sea level rise where you are way south of Point Conception, but it was 7 feet where I live and 8 feet up north in Crescent City where it actually swept an individual taking pictures into the water. That person is still missing.

This is such a big devastation......my family and I are hoping and praying for those who are in Japan safe and to the ones who couldn't make it...

Thank freaking goodness Guam, The Northern Marinas, and Palau (most of my family resides there) was unaffected by the tsunami, especially being right under Japan. My aunt went back to Palau for my grandmother's funeral this week as well as to visit the rest of my family. She called us today saying they are all safe and the tsunami warnings were lifted.

Godspeed to those in Japan and to everyone who is being affected by this Tsunami.

You're right. It's actually a physical impossibility for the plant to explode (At least, a nuclear explosion. You could still blow the plant up or something like that, obviously lol).

Thanks to the modernization of the nuclear power plant, meltdowns are also now impossible.

The worst that could happen is the earthquake could cause fires inside and whatnot which could lead to a regular explosion. The problem here is the radioactive material would spread to the surrounding area and contaminate it.

However, I have a feeling this is the least of the worries in Japan right now.

Best of wishes to anyone in Japan right now.

Edit: After reading news stories on the plant, it seems fine. Radiation levels around the plant are perfectly within normal range.

The vapor they vented was only slightly radioactive iirc.

yeah fukushima is in the middle of a partial meltdown i guess

bummer

This directly conflicts with Reach's post up above but all the articles I read were put up within the last hour so I suppose they didn't find this new evidence until after his post.
Quote:
The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) of the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MITI) has just announced that near Unit 1 of the Fukushima 1 Nuclear Power Plant, a radioactive element called "cesium," which results from nuclear fission, has been detected, so it believes that a part of the nuclear fuel at the reactor core of Unit 1 has melted down.
Also, on the vapor thing, an article mentioned they only "considered" venting the radioactive vapor to help cool the plant. The US sent some coolant over but I guess it's not enough without any power. The rest of the article reports on what analysts think the worst-case scenario here is.

Turns out that there were some significant damages here in the state, primarily in Kona, HI. Several houses suffered extensive damages and a few were completely destroyed. Then there is this two-story house that literally got lifted from it's foundation from the tsunami and started to float away:

I was going to accuse you of lying, but then the news article said that it was a vacation rental. If you really did go here last summer, well sorry for bringing you somewhat shocking news.

I'm shocked, and frightened by this, horrifically. I was supposed to be in Japan this month, and I chose not to go due to financial reasons, I was going to be mainly in Tokyo, but Sendai was a region that was going to be visited on the trip as we went up north on the Eastern Coast of Japan. I could've been there, and what's scarier is, people I KNOW who went on the semester abroad trip, are there, and I haven't been able to reach them. It's beyond describable how terrifying this is, and the images are only more chilling....My heart goes out to all of Japan and everyone there, and I hope that we do everything we can to support and help them recover, but right now, the damage and death toll just keeps rising....it's disturbing in it's own way

Actually we're afraid of nuclear rain, which may happen after this meltdown (at least cesium 137 was detected outside the power plant).

Currently we are not sure how it will turn out yet, but possible worst result will be like chernobyl's case (hope not).
