I just don't think that anybody who self-identified as "ditzy and a space cadet" would suggest that Phoebe on Friends is an actual slap in the face to them because the spacey stuff she did proc'd the laugh track.

All of the characters on Friends or Seinfeld had personalities, and the personalities were what were played for laughs. The characters on BBT are nerds, but also have personalities, and when their personalities are played for laughs (Say, when Raj gets drunk and says something offensive, or when Sheldon takes something super literally that wasn't literal) there's no real problem. It's when they are doing actually non-funny standard "This is how nerds actually are" stuff, and we're supposed to laugh, that it is a problem.

I completely and utterly fail to see how making fun of someone's disability is somehow ok and more acceptable than making fun of someone who ensconces themselves in make-believe.

Also, I'm absolutely certain that someone with a brain who identifies strongly with who they are, get upset when they are poked fun of. Like, I'm sure there are some MRAs who would be insulted to have Raj get laughed at when he says something sexist. (edit: this point is just fodder...not really helping my argument at all)

edit: And certainly not every nerdy thing they do gets made fun of. If it's a nerdy thing that's a part of their careers it's not made fun of, like going to space, and it's a serious plotline in an episode when Sheldon is passed up on the opportunity to see the hadron collider.

While it is widely assumed that Sheldon has an Autism Spectrum Disorder, that is not in any way canon. At the moment he is just incredibly intelligent, and very socially inept.

Yeah, because man, I know growing up, being the nerd absolutely put me in the TYPICAL crowd that got to insult or laugh at other people.

Well, if you're coming from a place where your being a nerd subjected you to as much abuse as it did me, I don't understand how you could possibly say what you said earlier.
