Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
kommi you're currently the best judge for this pack
just take a look at everyone else, the amount of hand-holding is enormous
"i don't want to out right reject this file so maybe perhaps i'll wait for another judge to maybe reject it then i won't look as bad"
Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
It's not that I'm being soft. It's that I actually understand what each person is attempting to do in their charts. It's much easier to objectively judge someone's work when understand their vision and understand how it pertains to how other people would feel about it. Then I can actually give constructive advice and criticism. I used to be elitist and obnoxious as fuck because I thought my way was the best way. I didn't understand that other people also did good work, they just did things differently.
I'm "hand-holding" because I realize that a lot of people have good stuff to offer the community, but there's no one that offers insight in the way that I approach them (see my Amatias review for example), so I try to give people that chance to learn. I don't avoid "soul-crushing" comments because they're negative, I simply don't often see times when it's helpful.
I can have a sense of humor at times, but at the end of the day I take this stuff seriously, both because I want to and also because now I have to. I don't soften my reviews and I don't harden them either. What matters is the content of the review, and if you try to be nice or less nice, that gets distracting and it becomes harder to make your point without getting emotions involved (see what happened when I poked fun at Kommisar's chart).
As for why I label a lot of my reviews as "Pending", there's always gray lines when it comes to judging art[-like mediums], and when charts land somewhere in there, and I see justification for both pack inclusion and exclusion, I leave it up to other people to offer additional perspectives in order to make a better judgment. In addition, this is ultimately headed by Rebirth, and while I can help him with most judging points, a couple of subjective elements depend on his vision of the pack, and if I don't fully understand his vision, I need to respect that and leave that up to him.

Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
the biggest thing I got from that post is that the pack still needs a name change, because all of that is incompatible with the title of "dark chancellors"
Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
Endless Despair II- this is really cool, and i think there's enough variation in the chart to justify it being so long. plus hammering out the jumpjacks during the choruses fuckin rocks Kirlian Choices- holy crap this is boring. the song has a lot of variation in intensity but the steps are always really flat and uninteresting Magic- song choice isn't that bad but you pretty much choose the most boring things to follow at every possible point where you have a choice Marill- hell yeah. really nice and varied, nothing else to say My Time- you already know i think this file is awesome. however, i don't think this really has an audience. people who can pass the 32nd section will get insanely bored by the rest of the file, and people who are cool with the slower sections will straight up die on the hard part. that said, i still think this is almost perfect, but the transition out of the 32nd section (with the hidden trill in it) is a mess. maybe you should scrap the ending? it's kinda dull Rydeen- my opinion doesn't really matter since this is already in but i just wanted to say the song choice is godlike Shawty Wanna Fuck- a solid attempt but no
Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
I've been one to say that the song sucks and not accept it, I don't know what you're talking about.
I've even said that certain files are accepted but might not make final cuts. And when I say that I most likely mean they won't make final cuts
I'll say right now that 60% of the song choice for submissions so far are bad. And to me personally, song choice is at the very least equal to the quality of the stepchart for what makes a file good.
Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
After a bunch of chit chat, it sounds like the question that should be asked, according to a number of concerned users, is: what's in a name? I personally don't care, but many others find the current pack name incompatible to the direction the pack is currently heading, even if the direction is progressive. What do you think, Rebirth0?
Re: Dark Chancellor Pack 2 (ITS HAPPENING.GIF) Submissions Open
This pack honestly is a bit different than the original Dark Chancellors Pack. This pack is more about community submissions than the last one was, so it is fair to change the name. I still do not have any great ideas for a new name that I could carry for multiple volumes if I wanted to. (and to be honest I haven't really tried thinking of a name lately either).
DCP1 is really only viewed as elitist because we had like 5 - 10% of the submissions come from the rest of the community. This is mainly because the entire production of the pack took place on a hidden forum that only "dark chancellors" had access to, where we wanted to produce a pack mainly by ourselves and show the community what a good pack was. (Yes I understand exactly how bad that sounds) (Can't remember if this was on Red Fraction or ODI). All of the "dark chancellors" had access to view and play every submission that we had made and some of us edited some charts to show the other people how they would have done one part, and a lot of those changes were kept for the final release. It was truly a collaborative pack, just... by a select group of people. It's not that we were trying to be elitist about it, it was just more of a group project between those select people.
VGMP3 is honestly not much different. The only reason DCP1 was viewed so elitist is because you guys knew about the production of the pack where as for VGMP3, that same select group of people made a pack in COMPLETE SECRECY.
But really I just don't know what to call it yet, and I might not until the actual release.
