Hmm... my songs weren't marked as being bad before, just needed the yellow-note syndrome fixed and they would be fine, I was told.
But none of my files are in that list of jimerax's... |

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
I'm not sure, but is it possible that the number of horrible files submitted to the batch are because of selfishness? Like, most people submit for personal gain, so they can have files in the game and be known in the community, while we're supposed to be submitting for the good of FFR.
Maybe I'm wrong?

Also, pure selfishness and wanting to be known throughout the community can often spur people into sending in tons of crappy files. I step because 1) I have nothing to do really; kills time; 2) Trying to make the game more enjoyable; 3) It's fun. |

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
at first, i did it for the sake of getting files in.... getting known in the site...
but now, i do it to better my file-making-abilities.... get feedback on how to make my self better, which would in turn, make the quality of sims just that much better... selfish drive winding up in a nonselfish result..... ish... |

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
I would never submit files to FFR to improve stepping skills. First of all, it's inefficient. Second, the judgment would never be detailed enough.
I might submit files to be known, but the only reason I even want to be known is so that my opinions would be heard.

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
Generally true, but it's partially because no one is thinking outside the box.

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
I just find that stepfile making is a great creative outlet. I'm not very creative in anything else other than writing (as a musician I'm a great analyzer but not a great creator). This is my way to show the world (or at least the rhythm-gaming community ) my interpretation on the music I hear.
EDIT I actually have an awesome idea for a great, original file, but I don't think the judges would accept a Splash Beats V2 of a similar difficulty as V1. I need to find a different song...

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
for me, those cases.
1. when someone asks me to step a song. 2. when I want at least 1 song of the artist I've got permission for FFR. 3. when I find a song that I really like. |

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread
hehe so I did say something right then
also 1 Quote:
There's no way for me to describe how to think outside the box except do things differently and successfully, such as trying a new theme in a stepfile (me, hi19hi19, jimerax, and a few others have pioneered several). Don't step dumb songs that will likely be abused by everyone in the database or will make generic charts, and don't make generic charts. While I'm at it, EW's files a pretty overrated. Like SD, he's decent, but his files lack anything note-worthy. Step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

I'll start with a simple example. Let's take {Rose}, a popular file and easy to analyze. Most people just place random jumpstream and a random index 16th stream, sometimes pitch-relevant. To "think outside the box" you could adding jumps to every 4th note to accent the bass drum, or even layering the strings with freezes (obviously not for FFR, but for SM it could be good). There, you've done something most people wouldn't do, and if you executed it correctly, it could be a fun file. That's just one example. There are tons of technicalities to look out for when making a file, such as climax theory, difficulty, consistency, choice of voicing, layering technique, flow, song choice, sync, etc. Even if you think you've mastered one area there's a whole new way to step you've never tried. Just because someone likes your file doesn't mean it's good. Just because someone hates your file doesn't mean it's bad. People hate Secrets and Lies, but it's an incredible file. People like Alpha Helix, but it's a horrible file. I have no idea why you would complain about my ego because I've been bitching for a long time now. I know what I'm talking about, and the only reason I'm so aggressive is because this way I'll be noticed and it will be that much easier for me to help the site as well as other people. I bitch because I care, and if I don't have a good grasp of something I would never push my opinions and help so strongly. Hope you understand, please don't think I'm egotistical just to be an ass. Good day, stargroup :P
