Left: Left Middle
Down: Left Index
Up: / on numpad
Right: 9 on numpad

What a lot of other people do, just one key up.

I use my index finger for the left arrow, I use my middle finger for the up and down key, And I use the one beside my middle for the right arrow key... So I only use 3 fingers. And I can do Secret zombie room without missing an arrow.
4 fingers is much easier...
But I prefer 3 for added hardness to levels.

Everything up through breaking the common is a snap to full combo with three fingers. After that it gets a little tough. The only hard part about switching over to fourfinger was trying for these left hand trills.

ive been playing two hand 3 finger for a little more than a year now, and i felt that ive reached my skill limit (FC Cia rave, fantranstic etc...) and that i couldnt improve all that much with my setup (arrows) so i decided to switch over to four fingered, my current setup is:

L index = down
L middle = left
R index = up
R middle = right

ive only been practicing this for maybe a week now, and im having a few problems that maybe someone could help me with. my main problem is fast sets of stream on UR and LD, and it seems that everything is a little harder to read when im playing 4 finger, but i guess ill get used to that with more practice. so are you supposed to switch your setup in order to hit fast sets of stream?or should your fingers always stay ontheir respective keys? any help would be great, thanks in advance ^_^

I usually try to hit those trills fast but then thats also reason for my recent switch to index
The trills in 4finger are a lot harder than in index.

You will be able to hit fast trills with spread as well, it's just takes time to adjust for your middle fingers, after 3 months doing spread my speed finally getting to the point where I can do fast trills without much problems and still improving more and more.

As I stated in my above post, 1 week is nothing. You need a lot more time for your middle fingers to adjust + coordinating 4 fingers is what makes you think it's tougher to read(will adjust). I started from scratch with spread and it took me roughly 2 months to start being able to hit fast patterns you mention.

All being said and done, spread maintains the highest potential ceiling of all styles in my opinion.

Well...I'm making somewhat of a good improvement...I've AA'ed When Demons Awake, A'ed Pride of The Tyrant and Knightrider of Doom, B'ed MSWGO (short version), and other smaller achievements...been playing a lot more lately surprisingly, considering I'm starting to get back into FFXI :P

well, ive been practicing playing 4 fingered for about a month now, and ive got to say ive really surprised myself as to how useful it can be, and youre able to read the arrows so much faster than with index or 3 fingered. i used to ususally play SM 3 fingered on a C550 mod, now i use a C750 mod and can pass songs i didnt even think were possible, like "I'm A Maid" on challenge, im still having a great deal of trouble 1. pressing fast combinations of air eg. LU then RD, LU, RD, LU. 2. as always those Trills for LD and UR (how the hell do you do the ones in splash beats??) , and 3. for some reason i cant seem to get the stream combination of LRDULRDU like....ever. im still not quite as good as i used to be when i play 3 fingered, but im definately getting there, successfully FC'ed Get Down, and Delirium, so i think im well on my way. switching to fours is definately one of the better decisions ive made, and i urge everyone else to try it out too ^_^

ya i know, it is a bit chaotic, but i can pass it with a C or B depending how "in the zone" i am, and i can get about 3/4 through "Gigadelic" not sure who stepped it, but its got an insane amount of arrows, mostly air, although i must admit i button mash though one of the parts, sorry getting a little off topic here,

Still...that is crazy...I can't handle jumps like that =P Songs like Black Dragon still give me a lil trouble (mostly endurance, but once I miss a few arrows, it takes about 100 steps to get back into a rhythm XD)....so yeah, I be needing to work on my jumps....are there any slower songs you can recommend?

ya try Fur Elise Rave or Samurai Hardbeat or Beloved, i have trouble doing Beloved though, its not a fast song or anything, its just that i cant really do the jump two sets, i dunno, they confuse me

lol, dude, I must suck or something....

in Samurai Hardbeat and I'm A Maid, when you hit those runs of just doubles, or the runs of doubles/16th note sets....I'm just mashing arrows at those points XD I can read the arrows but meh fingers can't move that fast ^_^!

heh. I began using the arrow keys in a four fingered setup, index and middle fingers.
left middle finger: left arrow key
left index finger: down arrow key
right index: up arrow key
right middle: right arrow key
I'm up to the master levels, while one handed I'm only at the standards.
I'm glad I started 4 fingered. :P

edit: now that I think about it though, during trill and speedy parts occasionally the fingers "jumble up" I don't know how to explain it, but they definitely don't go as fast as they could. I'm going to try switching to the arrow key-numpad combo that people were posting abput earlier. ^^

when it gets to those parts i just like completely zone out, and let my subconscience take over hitting those arrows, it almost feels like im button mashing...but getting all of em right lol, you just have to start to understand how to move your fingers in that way, like in Night Flyer, every hard beat (music wise) theres an air step, the rest is all 16th stream, so you kinda have to tweak your brain a little bit to listen to the music closely and not just randomly hit arrows, i dont know about everyone else, but thats how i work ^_^
