Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
I'm starting to play sm some more, and this sounds like a great idea. Getting rid of the elitism is a wonderful start, but there are always going to be certain people who ruin it for everyone else.

Otherwise elites will come, flame, talk smack, act like the big boys around like they do here and on other forums. And the nooblets will come, get flamed, and leave or cause problems. The place will also have to offer a lot more than just forums though... I don't what else was discussed about it, but I'm up to try for a StepMania Utopia. |

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Of course there will be people like that, but trying to keep to at least a minimal is perfect. I just hate when people who are really good, but they don't know it yet, get shut down by a pro and eventually, that "noob" will be better than that pro lol

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
I am willing to put in "research" (google tiem) for setting up a server. A couple years ago I set up an SMO server with some links from byron and maybe rebound (i forget). It worked virtually and locally no problem. I never had anyone to test it over the web though.
The thing is bandwidth. At my shop I sent 100 kbps on a megaupload. This would be "ok" for a smaller group. At home I cannot give up bandwidth. I may look into pricing for bigger tubes at the store. I just cannot gaurentee for I do not know how much bandwidth will be needed and how much I can offer LOL. Maybe certain parts can be hosted in certains places and just tie in the different IP's as needed. Probably a nightmare to admin, again, I am willing to put in the research and depending on all variables maybe up my bandwidth. 200, let alone 2000 users, will be TONS of usage. I just do not know the numbers. Edit* as far as "elitism" goes. I am assuming most of us know our own skill levels. If you play enough SMO you know the others skill levels. No sense in stating the obvious. I myself am quite average in skill. I play for fun and the community. To be quite honest, In the last 3 months of playing SMO I haven't ran into any negativity. It "seems" that the community is maturing All in all, we need to put our heads together and make this happen. Plan it out and then execute. Structure of site/Ideas phase, Implementation/testing, Beta accounts, Advertising/linking the fuc out of it, ???????, killer fuccen community. Last edited by ELRayford; 04-28-2011 at 09:15 PM.. Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Though, we shouldn't get too carried away with all sorts of ambitious features and such, but I'd love to talk to the sm-ssc dev team and ask if they would help out with a system recording scores in a online database or something using a new and improved sm client.
From my point of view, making the sm client have all the features osu! have, it would seriously expand the community really quick, new motivation for old players, making people want to try the game, and the stepmania community will once again flourish. |

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
Read and Understood. Do you happen to know what type of connection would be best? I am 70% sure we have fibre lines in the ground and they may offer a higher rate for cheaper.

Re: A new beginning for our SM community.
an fast connection is expensive like shit and always will be, ofcourse you can get a cheap fast connection but expect bad service and an unstable connection.
