Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
Haha, about the fifths thing, that's how it is for me too. Not too surprising though really. If anything, I can DEFINITELY tell any fifths apart, ascending or descending. This is probably actually pretty common in "relative pitch" people, but I could be wrong.Comment

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
It's a really interesting thing. I'd like to do research into the complexities of perfect pitch, absolute pitch, acquired pitch, etc. Being in that neutral and less common section of people who don't have perfect pitch but still have semi-absolute pitch or just pitch memory makes me really want to know how this stuff works.HIGH-FIVING A MILLION ANGELS!

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
I play piano by ear pretty well, I never learned how to read sheet music efficiently, but the stuff I can play can get pretty complex.
But I can't do well on this test because everything I do is from reference. You can't just play a random note and expect me to identify it lol. Let alone 80

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
From what I hear, those that have absolute pitch can identify "pitches" from random sounds such as when you slam the door or drop a pen on the floor. Even though I passed this test, I can't do such things lol
Maybe it's just that I have a really good relative pitch instead of its counterpart (I can recognize pitches of fire alarms or car honks tho)Comment

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
I have this weird halfway point in between. If I hear a door squeak or something I can tell you what partials of the fundamental tone were expressed to cause the squeak, but I can't tell you what the pitch of the fundamental is. However, I've played guitar so much that I know about where E and D are on the scale, so I can refer to those and tease out what the pitch is. This test moves way too fucen fast for me though. From what I hear, those that have absolute pitch can identify "pitches" from random sounds such as when you slam the door or drop a pen on the floor. Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
This is probably why I know the notes I know (E, D, B). And if I want to figure out if a tone is an A note, I would think of an E in my head and automatically know what an A sounds like, since it's the succeeding note, if that makes sense. I can use that technique for most notes rofl.Comment

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
heh. Yeah, this test was a bit too quick to be able to use relative pitch effectively for each tone, but its purpose was to weed out the people with perfect pitch. I can also hear certain noises (alarms, vehicle beeps, etc.) and tell instantly what note they are if the note is C, E, Eb, F, F# or Bb. If it's something else, it takes me no more than 2 seconds to use relative pitch or reference music (in my head) to figure it out.
This thread is much more interesting than the color thread (imo). =DHIGH-FIVING A MILLION ANGELS!

Exactly this -- it doesn't give enough time for me to ponder what the pitches are.I have this weird halfway point in between. If I'm given a reference point, then I can figure out what the note is in comparison to that reference point (relative pitch). But I won't sit here and say I have absolute pitch.
Also, sick scores, 0 O_OComment

Re: how well do you recognize pitches?
Pure tone: 34
Piano tone: 36
I missed a couple in the first test because I couldn't actually make out the tones properly on my speakers. But yeah, I knew I possessed absolute pitch: frankly I'm not sure I would have taken up music as a major or enjoyed music in general as much if my sense of pitch was poor, so I feel thoroughly blessed to have it.Comment
