Well, you know, there are many analogous structures among such animal life. In my biology class, we did frogs, but in other higher level classes, they did pig fetuses and cats or something.

I guess what I'm trying to say here, in a round about way, is that biological structures can be learned about without slicing and dicing that species. It is helpful to the process, but not entirely necessary. For example, I know things about the innards of a human body, but I've never cut open a human.

Hmm... I think what I've just said has come out a little wrong. I am in favor of dissection as a learning tool, but even so, cutting open one thing can teach us things about ALL animal life. But that aside, I am definitely in favor of students opting out of participation in such activities on the grounds that it is rather disgusting (assuming the course is a required course, that is). Sorry, I'm still locked in on this writing style from my wall in that homework thread.

tldr: cutting open frogs can teach you about all forms of life, but even so, people should be able to opt out of taking part in dissection if they so choose.

I once cut open a fish to fillet it. I learned so much about all of animal life from that one experience. Fish = Frog = Pig = Human. We're all the same. In fact you could dissect an insect and learn everything you need to know about human anatomy.

I am not in favor of letting kids opt out of knowledge. If you let kids opt out of one thing, you give them the ability to opt of anything. Don't want your kid learning about the Big Bang Theory? Have him opt out! Don't want to learn about human reproduction? Opt out! Disagree with ionic bonding? Opt out!

Afro, I'm opposed to mixing chemicals. I think chemicals should be kept separate. I think it's wrong that we force our will onto the chemicals. The chemicals never asked to be mixed. Therefore, I'm opting out of all Chemistry labs. Not satisfied with this, I am legally changing my name to DontMix Chemicals.com.

@Chaz, seeing as I live here too, I can tell you almost everyone in the state has Class: NONE on their license.

Meh, we dont (to my knowledge) have animal dissection in England (correct me if i am wrong).

You are wrong. Back when I was taking A-level biology, we dissected a frog, pumped air into an open cow corpse to watch the lungs inflate, and messed about with a pigs heart.

We also tested how durable the lungs are by puncturing them whilst they were inflated. Good times.
