Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston. His parents, David and Eliza Poe were poor actors. David supposedly died of alcoholism on October 19, 1810. After a long struggle, Eliza died of tuberculosis on December 11, 1811. He had an older brother, William Henry, who was 5, and a sister, Rosalie, who was 1, but he was taken away from them to live with Frances and John Allen when he was 3. Although Frances deeply cared for him and John provided for him the best he could, Edgar was never legally adopted.
