Probably producing music, which is somewhat suppressed due to the fact that FL along with Sytrus is pretty damn expensive. I'm stuck with the demo for now.
I can't say FFR, I know a kid or two that are spread players. |

Nobody in this thread seems to understand the concept of egotism.
Ok whatever. You can be the best in a massive collection of people, of whom you probably know at most one hundred, as long as it makes you feel good inside. |

As I said before... FFR/DDR - Displayed publicly in front of entire school. Asked if anyone else played. No one raised their hands, therefore no one else plays, therefore I'm the best. SSBM - Won a school-wide tournament Academics - Highest GPA, highest SAT score, etc. Fixing computers - I'm called upon to fix everything relating to computers; only one other person, a teacher, is. There are several other things I -think- I'm the best at, but I don't know for certain, which is why I didn't post them. EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify. My school only has like 500 students, which is why all of these school-wide comparisons are possible. If I went to a standard public high school with 1500+ students, I couldn't make any of these statements. Last edited by Relambrien; 12-22-2007 at 07:15 PM.. |

Let's put it this way. Let's say some Amish kid is the fastest runner in the world. Nobody knows about it because, well, Amish kids seclude themselves from the rest of the country, really. Since there's no electricity, it's doubtful that he watches the Olympics or has the capability to see who the fastest runner in the world is. Thus, he doesn't know his speed with relation to anyone else in the world outside of his small community, and the rest of the world assumes nobody is faster than whoever holds the Olympic medal (even though I guarantee some people can run faster than Olympic medalists since it requires sponsorship and such to get into the event, which not all people are capable of obtaining). Let's put this in terms of Squeek. Squeek didn't do extracurricular activities. Squeek doesn't participate in tournaments. Squeek didn't join any clubs or participate in any events. If someone wins a tournament held at school, does that mean he's the best player in the school? What if he happened to be my close friend whom I've competed against in person and have beaten every time? Unless you hold a mandatory-participation event, you can't claim you're the best. Some people just don't care to compete even if they have great talent. Now, what you can do is say you're the best at something that everyone in the school does. For example, in P.E., they generally have those fitness days where everyone does pull-ups, sit-ups, leg reaches, etc. to see how they compare to others and improve over time. Since everyone has to do this, it's safe to say that when you're the best in an event, you're the best in your school (among those who cared to try. again, impossible to control, but eh. stupid loner kids not showing off their potential...). @Squeek
I figured it was implied that if someone doesn't care to show their skill, then they are not to be included in a comparison of skill. It's as if they're forfeiting their own right to attempt to be considered "the best." Meaning, anyone who elected not to participate in the tournament chose not to try and be considered "the best." By that definition, yes, I am "the best." Now, I don't know about you, but that's the definition most widely used in my school/community. You may elect to consider unseen skill in determining who is "the best," and in that case, it really is impossible to claim anyone is the best at any specific event on a scale such as a school. Thus, I prefer to use a definition where someone -can- claim to be the best, and this definition is accepted within my area. Example: Say I'm a really good violinist (I'm not, but for this purpose, assume I am). I'm absolutely incredible, to the point where I can play better than anyone else in my school. However, I choose not to, for reasons of my own. So, if there is some violin-playing contest, I choose not to participate. However, I recognize the winner as being the best in my school, because I chose not to be. Just because I can -play- the violin better doesn't mean I -am- better. That may be difficult to understand, so you can think of it this way: Someone who -chooses- to display their skill is inherently "better" at an event than someone who chooses -not- to, regardless of what the actual skill level is. That's the definition accepted in my area. The rationale behind it is that, if you compare people solely on skill level, the comparison is almost always inaccurate due to people refusing to show their skill levels. By setting the skill levels of those who do not participate to zero, if you will, the comparison becomes accurate so long as those who do not participate agree to have their skill levels set to zero. This agreement is implied when they elect not to participate. Last edited by Relambrien; 12-22-2007 at 08:53 PM.. |
