Very interesting posts!
I'll have to try FFR. I'm finding Stepmania very fun but a little overwhelming, having never played any rhythm game outside of osu! a while back. Really digging it though. I see that there is a beta version of FFR, R^3 -- is there an ETA for the final release? |

Personally I came to FFR because of the mentioned competition, leaderboards, multiplayer's fun, etc. Unfortunately flash is a bottleneck for a lot of people - I tried FFR on windows at one point recently and goddamn do I feel sorry for all of you :P
I'm not a fan of Stepmania mainly because the interface is so awkward to use. The core game engine may be nice, but everything supporting it (config, menus, etc.) is awful. I guess that's because it was designed for an arcade/controller setup? When it's done. Don't let that discourage you from using it though, anyone new to FFR should be starting on R^3 over anything else.

As for me. I mainly play SM now since I really care less about competition :/ and also I kinda stopped caring about playing fiffer. With SM I have about 600+ packs that I can just play on each day if I wanted to.

I have vastly different paradigms for these two games. FFR is so stressful for me, and much more nerve-racking, because I'm constantly worrying about perfecting a song, as soon as I get a good I pretty much purposely fail out every time. In SM I don't have this problem, because the difficulty level is so high and so vast, and because of marvelous timing. I just like to play the songs in SM, as opposed to stressing over perfection in FFR.

Tried FFR R^3 beta and it works just fine, except for the fact that the arrows look a bit jagged around the edges with my retina Macbook Pro display.
Or is that just the way it looks because of the engine it's on? |

that might just be the look of the default noteskin. try poking around in the options, and see if any of the other noteskins look cleaner.

I will always prefer Stepmania over FFR anyday due to what everybody else has said; however, it does suck because it takes a little while to optimize the client depending on what type of machine you're playing on.

If the frame rate was smooth then I would like both games equall, but the smooth 60+ framerate of stepmania and having more customization options gives it the win for sure.
I like the ffr website and theres a lot of kool stuff but since they removed the simfile database and the game itself runs quite slowly framerates...not much reason to play ffr... Also u can increase the timing difficulty in stepmania, I play at level 6 for a challenge or if I want to get an AAA I can set it to level 4 XD |

I also don't like the fact FFR gives you boos when you don't strike any notes. It's pretty annoying.

Main reason why I prefer SM to FFR is that I don't feel pressured to get a new best since there are no leaderboards/ranks. A random great or cb is not an instant restart like it is on FFR.
Being able to customize it to my liking is also a big plus.

Used to dislike FFR but found a way to make it not lag at all so theres that, but it doesnt have an assist tick which kills my accuracy, it doesnt take years to load all my packs, makes my eyes hurt a bit
, with SM i use 3.95 so theres a bunch of errors (i'd use sm5 but no one has made the smmax theme for it), there are tons of packs, DISTANT MOD! i love that thing... cant think of anything else O_o I like both for the features they have |
