Ryan Locht was really amazing to watch. I was watching the rerun last night of the Olympics during the ending stretch of his 400IM, and I can't say I wasn't impressed that he not only took the gold his first year, but he also beat Phelps who has won a medal every year for the past 17 Olympics

No. I couldn't care about the Olympics.
My City is only hosting the Woman's Football and it's casing a lot of pointless chaos with public transport. I'd hate to actually be in London where everything is going on. |

Re: London 2012 Olympics
I know this is true, but I wouldn't assume that they did this for all athletes. Unless China is really that determined to win.

Re: London 2012 Olympics
Honestly I have no idea what to think of this Ye Shiwen thing.
It's not racist to raise suspicions, here -- the Chinese have had a history of doping and so when you see a random burst of performance, it's suspicious. What bothers me isn't that she beat Lochte's pacing during the final stretch or whatever. What bothers me is that she beat her personal best by five seconds. Considering that she grew up TRAINING for this sort of thing, I find it excruciatingly hard to believe that she suddenly gains this amazing performance boost right when it matters most. It reminds me a lot of my Death Piano situation, actually. I was the top FFR player for a while and could get top scores, but then towards the end I started pumping out these completely killer scores on stuff like RATO, Gigadelic, Death Piano, etc, that seemed unreal (and they were). This situation feels a lot like that. I really want to believe her, though. Constant doubt poses a problem. I can always move the goalposts. "She passed the tests? Well, maybe she figured out how to fake them," is always a possible excuse, which means that it is feasible that she never quite escapes suspicion no matter how much proof she provides. This wouldn't be such a big deal though if China didn't have such a spotty history. History + smashing personal best + smashing the speeds of top male athletes = an extraordinary claim requiring extraordinary evidence. If anything, I think Ye needs to step it up and volunteer to more tests. Phelps did it, which is how he was able to avoid controversies like these. If there's cheating involved, I'm sure someone will figure it out. Until then, I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. Last edited by Reincarnate; 07-31-2012 at 04:09 PM.. |

Re: London 2012 Olympics
I actually read an interesting article in Time about how China picks its Olympians. First, they only enter athletes in events with high medal counts, like swimming or weight lifting. Then, they cherry-pick children from the countryside (there's more than enough to spare) that meet very specific criteria for excelling in that event, and spirit them away to state-run training facilities. The weight lifters don't even know how much they're cleaning--it's their coach's responsibility to know, keep track, and correct any imperfections in technique.
But yeah, when Reincarnate puts it as how her new WR crushes her PR by five seconds right on the world's biggest stage, one can't help but raise an eyebrow. |

Re: London 2012 Olympics
We probably won't know if she doped for a while.
Remember how Le + teammates passed the tests for a decent while until suddenly they all got caught. |
