![]() I like this idea. I've always preferred downloading singles as opposed to packs, but at the moment there is no good place to do that. It would be important to figure out right away whether files would be hosted on the site itself (opening yourself up to more legal responsibility, as well as higher cost) or on mediafire/another file host (running the risk of hosting a bunch of dead links).
If it were me, I would hold off until we see what Bemanistyle's redone file database looks like. I'm fairly certain that they lost everything and aren't going to be restoring the old DB. Instead, they're using this opportunity to improve the system. However, they don't seem to consider it a high priority, as it's been 4 months since they got back up. I would be willing to help out with code or design. I've got a mini-DB for my own files at http://charlo.gamemakersgarage.com/stepmania/ which I coded myself. It's searchable and has a tagging system for genres (http://charlo.gamemakersgarage.com/stepmania/genres.php).

![]() If I was considering doing this as a new community, I would have done it with Red Fraction. This would ONLY be a website that has the database on it.
The first issue is what to call the place? What would the domain name be called? Stepmaniaonline.com isn't being used right now. But we all know what that is and used to be. Still, it could be a good idea. It is a general stepmania name that could imply anything is there, which could work for a simfile database |

![]() simfiledb.com is an idea that I'm suggesting, since it tells you right in the URL what it is.

![]() Big support here. I don't download packs because I'm low on bandwidth and am often more interested in only one song instead of all of them. This would fix this issue. It would also help new users get opinions about their file in a more direct way, like it used to be (granted you add that feature in there).

![]() +1 to simfiledb.com it's straight to the point.
But before we make jumps to domain names and such, we should probably figure out who's doing what. From what I know, Charlo is more experienced with database coding than I am. We should figure out what host we want. Transfer caps/bandwidth is the thing we would probably be worried about, but they're some good hosts out there for cheap. We should also figure out how we want to design the database. There's some suggestions to some interesting features that users would like.

![]() if it's going to be an entire website it'd be cool to have featured simfiles/simfile artists (up-and-coming folks not people everyone already knows obv)

I think a good system would be to pre-populate the database with genres, then if people really think that their file doesn't fit into an existing genre or would fit better with a different genre, they can submit it for addition to the site.

![]() I'm not even sure if it it would have song genres like that. If anything, when submitting a file, you would have the genre field a blank text box and you would name the genre yourself.
The best search options are obviously by file name or by simfile artist. Or solo/singles |

![]() i think being able to select the genre from a pre-selected list of genres would be cool and an easy way for people to find files for songs they might like(searching for metal files kpop breakcore etc)
also +1 for simfiledb.com of filecentral.com or stepmaniathedatabase.com

![]() If we're seriously considering doing this, we need to get some information first. We need to know how much we would expect to be paying per month for a website that could be hosting eventually over 100 GB worth of downloads and perhaps terabytes of download bandwidth per month.
And we'd need more financial support than just me. |

![]() If this were to be done, would we FINALLY be able to retrieve our old files from pre-crash days? Last time we inquired, Velocity said there was no space on the site.
