Re: Drinking age lowered to 18?
Actually it is 19 in canada, and 18 in certain select provinces.
As for the US, there's no federal law about drinking age, except that if the state sets the age at lower than 21, I believe the federal government says it will withhold federal funding to manage and maintain the road system. So if California really lowered the age to 18, I imagine that's going to be accompanied by a nice tax hike to cover their new expenses. Edit: I can find no mention anywhere of a lowering of the drinking law in any US state. Source your claim please? Last edited by devonin; 08-20-2008 at 09:24 PM.. |

Re: Drinking age lowered to 18?
No need to get all fritzy over this. The drinking age is still the same in the US. There just a bunch of colleges who want to push the lawmakers to lower it, probably to increase profits by selling booze on campus.

Re: Drinking age lowered to 18?
I agree with foilman and [TeRa]. Alcohol just needs to be made illegal. What good does it actually do? There is so much more risk added to everyday life with it even around. Most people just drink it to escape their everyday life. Which means they are basically using it as an antidepressant, and oh hey, there are pills for that in which everybody who comes within 200 feet of that person won't be put at risk. It's basically a drug, and if drugs are illegal why can't alcohol be? Sure, there are people mature enough just to have a sip of wine at a party, or something along those lines. But too many people just use it to get ****-faced and escape from life. Maybe 15% of the U.S. can maturely handle it. But that 85% endangers everyone else.
I wish the would make it illegal altogether. This won't happen though. That's why I would like to see a push for it to be raised, not lowered. |

For Americans! It should be like this! Old enough to go to war, old enough to drink!

Of course if you ask college kids around the state if they want the drinking age to be lowered they're going to say yes. That's so blindingly obvious. You could ask a bunch of 10 year olds around the state if they want their recess time extended and you bet your ****ing balls they're all gonna say hell yeah. If you can't see how lowering the drinking age would harm society as a whole, and ruin a lot of young people's lives, then you are attached to a biased ignorance and you're probably under 18 to boot. Instead of losing all control by relegating drinks and drugs to the illegal domain, the US government should probably use more resources to control alcohol and drugs use, give decent education and information, offer good and affordable care to addicts, invest in preventive measures to detect and treat alcohol or drugs abuse in an early stage etc. I know, the ancient battle between the European idea of mother state vs the American idea of a strong judicial system and a weak, laissez faire, government, and I'm aware I'm painting a rather black-and-white picture, but the gist should be clear: face the problem and effectively control it instead of being morally puritanistic (pampering addicts, soft on crack-heads, the devil incarnated in youthful alcoholics zomg!), and covering very real problems by supposedly hard and just laws. *end of rant*

Re: Drinking age lowered to 18?
Part of drinking is the feeling of rebelliousness. Thus, lowering the drinking age would just turn drinking into drinking. It wouldn't be as much of a thrill anymore. I myself know many people that have started drinking less once they hit the legal age because there isn't as much adventure for them anymore. I myself did it once for the sake of getting drunk. The next day was not pleasant. >_<
