Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
i think some of the people who stepped files didnt grow up with other files being the norm, so they dont really know an outside perspective.
i mean they do, but they don't. shit i remember when these files would be labeled as horrid. |

Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
I've been stepping since 2004 or so. I've seen stepping styles change over the years. Some people may still be within the microcosms of early-mid 2000s stepping, and that's fine by me. Some still solely with pad, and that's fine by me. Let people experiment how they want with stepping.
In 2005, yes, these files would be considered overwhelming and ridiculous. Not anymore - in this community at least. I'm fine with change. I would show you how my old charts compared to the newer ones, but all of my old stuff were wiped out when bemanistyle deleted its simfile database around 2006 (and now it seems that there's no simfile database as recently as a year ago). Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
honestly, I think the current style changes are still a matter of the community adjusting. for example, in smg2 you can see that people were getting way too excited with those miniholds and spamming them everywhere, the same way you see in the last couple of packs people have been doing that with mines. once people figure out how to manage them properly, they'll stop being spammed and actually start being used how they were meant to be used
this outside perspective or knowing the "norm" also doesn't REALLY matter. I mean, it does, if you want your chart to be the best it can, but to capture the essence of a song the most important part is having a good ear. if someone new to charting comes along, doesn't know the "norm" yet and has a good ear that is demonstrated in the chart, we'll see it, this guy isn't going to get ignored ps reviewed loli hard chart

Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
Come on, let's not ruin moches' thread now. I'd love to see more thoughts on the pack's files.

Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
I attempted to download the full pack but I live in the middle of nowhere and my internet doesn't stay connected for that much time at a shot. Will attempt the pack parts another time.
Going on the argument about making files because you enjoy playing them: technically some people find more enjoyment in making the files themselves over playing them. I personally had more fun watching the computer play my files and seeing an idea come together than I did keyboard smashing. Argument can be made that I haven't finished a file in a couple years or something, but that's mostly because I ran out of music to step.

True, but that doesn't entitle ourselves to be pricks regarding someone else's opinion.

Re: FFR Community Pack 4 Released!
the pack has a few pretty great gems
overall the pack is really lacking and is mostly generic unfun files imo.

I think stargroup basically hit the nail on the head: my perception of a file has to do with seeing 1) what the stepartist set out to achieve and 2) how well that objective is executed. it's really a matter of whether what you do is reflective of the song, imo. the tricky part (and where a lot of the disagreement about "fun factor" and "technicality" and all that jazz) becomes separating your personal taste with what you have to evaluate above. there's so many ways to play/interpret this game. I wouldn't say any of them are wrong. the problem is that people paint in broad strokes, saying that something is "overly technical" when it's clear that it wasn't specifically made for them in the first place. it's like, I hate horror films, but does that mean that I'm going to shit on a well-made movie just because I don't like it and no matter how good it was I wouldn't have liked it in the first place? that's not fair to the creator (in any medium), imo. he/she has no obligation to me. but like bmah said, I'd love to hear what more people think about the pack (aka more reviews whores) |
