no never did the putnam, but it's pretty hardcore. in all honesty it'd probably grill me in the long run -- you have to literally live and breathe math to compete against the kind of people who compete in it seriously. i'm still able to do a lot of the crap they shell out in the aime/amc/usamo, but meh.
btw what's so funny about that paragraph? there's nothing really all that hilarious there -- it's just a list of people. standardized testing is pretty useless in terms of college preparation though, i'd agree.

the sick thing is is that you can take a crapload of ap's, get 5's on them, and get out of a lot of requirements in many colleges -- even Ivies. That's one thing I was a little bitter about as an IB student because even though it's harder, you get less bang for it, so you wind up shelling out a ton of money for AP's to avoid the incremental costs later on in terms of wasted classes

gnr: international baccalaureate program. it's more common outside the US, but many US schools are starting to offer it. It's basically AP on steroids but with fewer benefits and more stressful side projects like TOK and Extended Essay. It's all BS really, but it does help loads in college admissions bc colleges know how rigorous it is compared to AP.
EDIT: Also, IB tests come in standard level/high level format and are graded on a scale of 1-7. Getting an HL 7 is quite a bit harder than getting an AP 5. bender: i want to make a game like hungry hungry hippos, only instead of hippos they are MrRubixes, and instead of little ball things, it could be ego food. only my MrRubix is bigger than the others
