Starting to step charts for pad (I think I've got a good idea)
I just wanted to know how to create the moving holds? (The holds you have to tap through such as in songs like tricky disco - not sure the actual term).
I'm gonna do a few moderate rock songs, starting with Drowning Pool's Regret. Wondering if anyone could help me out here or offer advice. I'll try to upload or send to anyone with experience when I'm done so that I can get some feedback. Thanks a bunch -revo

The actual term for this is "rolls", for ITG.
To make them in the editor, you use the same keyboard gesture as you would when making a mine, except you drag down as if you were making a freeze. Press and hold shift, and then the arrow you want, then drag down. Simple as that! |

Awesome thanks Halo I figured you or Oni or someone would come along and solve my issues. P.s. can you hit me with a blank .sm file I just want to mass produce it for purposes of creating a bunch of charts.

About rock songs, it may be just me, but normally those songs are hard to step in general. I never liked stepping them because it's hard to know which to follow most of the time x.x

Rock songs are very straight-forward. Stick to an overlay beat towards the beginning, begin progressing with the supporting guitar and/or drums (depending on keys or pad) behind vocals, generally stepping vocals unless it's rap or something similar isn't as fun to play. As far as guitar solos and things like that it's just a matter of experimenting to find the timing windows or you can look up sheet music to get the correct note-timing. That's about all I can think of. Generally in different styles of rock, there are varying song progressions, more of which is in hard rock, metal, and prog vs punk and alt rock

Re: Starting to step charts for pad (I think I've got a good idea)
I was told that the frequency at which rolls must be hit is equivalent to 4th notes at 200BPM (Hence you couldn't make a legitimate roll out of 170BPM 4ths, for example).
Through actual pad practice, I've found this to be not exact, though roughly correct. Just keep that in mind for whatever you're doing.

Yeah unfortunately 3.9a doesn't have roll capabilities but I also have 3.95 so I can always super-edit anything on there (using 3.9a for all my new files for load speed and convenience). I am kinda liking this so far but it's a bit bland and I definitely am out of practice stepping (considering I've made one complete good file, two incomplete eh files).

I hit all my rolls like 8th notes trills or a jack just for the sake of keeping a steady beat. I know others who hit rolls like 12th notes if stamina needs to be conserved. Overall, rolls are annoying and rather pointless (IMO) unless a song has 32nd/64th bursts and compensation is needed. P.s. I stepped 115 by Elena Siegman - Interesting "headbanger" song from Black Ops. |
