I never got into this show. It has very little to offer in my opinion. I can honestly say that I don't see any of the winners going big and staying big from this show. Some make it moderately far, but still. I don't see these people going anywhere.

You don't see them going anywhere because they don't go anywhere, because they can't go anywhere, and if they do it isn't far and isn't for long. Am. Idol just rakes in the money while they can.

And singing talent alone doesn't mean anything. Range and control are not hard to find within a popular music context. This is like a national karaoke bar. Being a performer, musician, and artist takes a lot more than a singing voice.

Organism, obviously- you need charisma and stage presence.
Musical talent also kind of puts you over the top. All these American Idol winners end up manufactured and reinvented by record labels and producers. Just like most of these mainstream fags, the labels pull some retard off the street with passable looks and reasonable range, and they give them a record deal and essentially make the album for them.

I'm strongly against this record-selling ploy.

But then again, I'd be happy to see most of these record labels die out. Times are changing.

Kelly Clarkson isn't really popular anymore.

The thing is, you can't just have a contest like American Idol and shove a person into the music industry like that. What makes people is the time, their look, personality, what people are looking for, and luck. You have to be in the right place at the right time, in the type of environment they're getting into. It doesn't just happen from having raw talent, regardless of what you all seem to think. Pop artists come and go, fads, etc. But American Idol is just a mockery of the actual process, which is just a total quagmire in itself.

I can agree with this (with OrganisM).

They do change them, which is annoying.

Allmusic's review of Melinda Doolittle's album (awesome) sums it up for me:

"After doing a background check on Melinda Doolittle, during the early stages of American Idol's sixth season, something did not quite add up. Why would a singer so skilled, already something of a proven industry veteran -- with backing vocal credits on albums by Aaron Neville, CeCe Winans, Jonny Lang, and several others -- need to go through such a grueling process to get noticed and land a recording contract? As Doolittle continued to thrive on the show, that became more difficult to understand, and it also became increasingly evident that it might be best for her to not win the whole thing. With any luck, she'd fall just short of taking the prize, land on a sympathetic label, and team up with a professional producer who would tease out her strengths without worrying about platinum sales. And that, unexpectedly enough, is what happened."

The sad thing is the record labels are about making money, not about making great music or having a healthy industry. It's simply about profits. There are now new methods of distribution and marketing that don't involve major record labels. Snowcap and MySpace are prime examples, though obviously we're going to have to go a lot further than that. The good thing is that major players in the industry like NIN are pushing toward this direction, and with luck we'll have the artists at the forefront, dedicated toward making great music, and these marketing/distribution organizations will work for the good of the artists instead of simply for profit. That said, profit and appreciation of the art are most certainly not mutually exclusive. It's certainly possible to make just as much money while allowing healthy growth in the industry, but the record labels are stuck in their old ways, and it's about how to make money right now, use the industry for what it's worth, and get out with as much as they can. A sad state of affairs, but if the artists will fight back strong enough, they can all open new avenues. I hope to be joining their ranks shortly.

Yeah, though Radiohead kind of did that as a marketing gimmick rather than testing a new form of distribution. In that sense, NIN and Saul Williams are better examples.
