Hey I got a question. So I downloaded the song for my group but I guess my computer does not have the correct program to open it because the only thing I can open is the audio file. I put it into a folder in stepmania but when I open stepmania the folder does not even show up. When I double slick the .sm file it says "windows cannot open this file" and asks me to choose a program. Does anyone know what I need to be able to work on this file? Thanks.

Have you put it in the right folder? The entire song folder needs to be in the Songs folder, not the song/.sm file itself

(Also you can open .sm files with notepad, just set it as the default prog)

I believe so. I opened program files.....stepmania.....songs...made a folder...put that song in that folder. I'm thinking it may have to deal with the notepad program or something

just copy a premade song from SM and follow the template from there

aka make a blank template .sm from a pre-existing song and put your mp3 in a new folder etc

You have to have a folder inside the Songs folder for the "Group" that the song belongs to. For example, in my Stepmania folder, I have it as Songs/Stepmania 5/Blackout.

Yeah I ended up having to do that and I believe I got the problem fixed. Correct me if I'm wrong but now all I should have to do is just input the given information (BPM and Offset) into the newly created SM file that I copied from a previous song?

yeah just copy the BPM and song info

bpm format should be #BPM:0=XXX.XX;
if the song has static bpm

Thanks! I got everything to work except the BPM which I can't figure out. I typed it into the .SM file and saved it, and when I go into the stepmania song editor it didn't show up so I had to adjust it to the nearest 0.02 and leave it at that, even though the file says it's saved as the correct one. (I also hit the reload songs/courses) in stepmania in hopes of updating it but it didn't work.)

You could just redownload the song, and when you extract the .rar, extract it directly to C:/ . . . . . /Stepmania/Songs/[whatever folder you put songs you make in]. Then you should just be able to open it up in the SM editor.


Also, on the topic of "I don't want to compete because of who's in my group": It'll be great experience to be able to step a song without having to worry about syncing and having other established artists make a file you can directly compare to. I hope lots of people release their entries after the competition so that people can compare and learn from each other.

DONE! Within Life was kinda fun to step even if I don't really like the song.

Might aswell step the 2 other ones so I can be more annoying on top of everyone
