Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
Some things I think people are missing
1 - this isn't just a Youtube thing it's any site based in the US. Youtube is just the example because they where breaking COPPA harcore running targeted ads on videos clearly meant for 5 year olds.
2 - They are judging a book by it's cover; it's if the video is enticing to kids/would want to make them click. You swearing halfway through/saying it's for an adult/boarding a plane with your butt doesn't factor into it. Because animation and cartoons are named as for children this could be a fucking huge issue for art channels, anime communities, etc. Also do videogame characters count as cartoons? I mean look at my sig there's Crash Bandicoot down there is he a cartoon that entices kids to click?
3 - If you mark your video targeted at kids Youtube basically fucks you. They can't run targeted ads or collect any data on it so instead it becomes unsearchable and doesn't get recommend
So anyone who was legit making content suitable for kids, or anyone thinking they could just mark it as for kids and not worry about it just gets fucked.
Which is really goddamn funny because when you make laws forcing actual children content to not exist because no one can make a living, you get an entire internet of edgy, trying to mature this up so COPPA won't sue me videos and an entire generation of 13 year olds still on the internet still watching shit on their parents account so fuck me, if you actually had a legitimate fear of kids watching something not age appropriate this shots the problem in the face.
---
For me, it's how loose the definition of "video games" is and the thumbnails, but the chances are the FTC has no where near the manpower to nail a channel as small as any of us. Our biggest problem is that nobody can make a living with content too mature because demonetization, and no one can make a living with content a kid might be tempted to watch, so then people just don't fucking make a living on Youtube and the whole site just stops being what it's being. There's a lot of implications and consequences if that happens, but probably not worth writing out here and now.Last edited by MixMasterLar; 11-22-2019, 11:35 AM.Comment

Ye I was tryna get some of those across but I missed #1 there. I knew it was an FTC thing but people focusin on YouTube made me think FTC was crackin down on YT only. Some things I think people are missing

That last paragraph there though perfectly encapsulates what I was tryna get at in the sense of like "punishing child-friendly content and also punishing mature content. I don't really understand the point of hiding content like that, Unless they're gonna incorporate some sort of YouTube Kids crap into it, like videos marked for kids will be more visible on there, while the "rest of the videos" or more "mature" videos will be on regular old YouTube. I'm bad at retaining information and let alone relaying it so if I missed somethin else or if anyone else does it'd be good to know so we all know what's goin down.

Coming up next, a new act which fines parents $42,000 if they neglect to bubble wrap their children before they leave the house.

I'm totally expecting in the future, least in the US, where you can't even turn on anything that could potentially connect to the Internet unless you read paragraphs among paragraphs of legal statements stating that you must be 13 or older to use said device. And then when you do go through all the legal statements, every single channel, website, whatever will have the same amount of legaleze to make sure you're aware that you must be 13 or older to watch/use/play/whatever.
All because parents don't want to do what they're suppose to do.

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
i mean like, it's whatever, if i get swept into something then i know a lawyer who's been paying attention and could possibly be interested in building a class
just ban the fuckers until their parents submit their paper form like we all "had" "to" in 2003. i really would've liked it more if they set it up as an additional age gate so i could physically prevent 12-minus-year-olds from having to encounter my contentComment

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
I think the chances of a class action lawsuit against YouTube for breaking the law and basically punishing the content they encouraged before they where caught has a seriously good chance of being a successful claim.
Theoretically I don't run ads on my videos so I shouldn't even have to worry about this shit buy YouTube, against my will and without my permission, still collects data on the people who watch my videos so I don't see how I don't have a case when their actions lead to the FTC fining me 42K
But that does lead to the question of what happens when, say, Pony Canyon claims your video and runs ads themselves. Like if it's a targeted ad and the FTC decides that Fatal Frame 3 is for children (ha) does Pony Canyon get the fine for forcing the ad on there against my will or do I get it as the video owner.
What a fucking mess
EDIT:It appears that as long as data is being mined it doesn't matter who benefits from the ad. So it's down to the video owner being responsible or YouTube being responsible because they mine shit
YouTube is trying to pass the buck and say that we should mark videos if they are for kids so they can blacklist them forever and if we don't, it isn't their fault if they mine some kid's data. Legally, YouTube doesn't have to have our videos visible but that's a clear hostage situation and I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the idea that nothing couldn't be done about it if content creators start getting career ending fines because of something YouTube decided to do on it's own.Last edited by MixMasterLar; 11-22-2019, 02:06 PM.Comment

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
A good consideration is that if shit really hits the fan, you can start downloading the videos from your channel now (if you're the owner, you can download your videos in the Studio view) and consider another website to host them on.Originally posted by hi19hi19oh boy, it's STIFF, I'll stretch before I sit down at the computer so not I'm not as STIFF next time I step a fileComment

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
I would ideally move everything to Facebook but the FTC is more or less internet wide I don't think any site big enough for consideration would be off their radar for that long.
Downloading videos you think might get purged unfairly, especially from older inactive channels, is something to consider. I'm sure we all know ways to accomplish downloading a YT videoComment

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
This isn't a YouTube-specific thing, it applies to literally all websites that collect info from their users. YouTube is absolutely in the firing line because of their popularity, but if everyone migrated to DailyMotion, you'd still be in the crosshairs.
YouTube sucks tremendous ass and consistently forces its legal problems onto the content creators instead of actually implementing meaningful change from the inside... that's the real reason you should leave YouTube, not because of COPPA.
At any rate, I'd suggest everyone actually go and read the legislation since there's a lot of misinformation and fearmongering out there. I don't think there's a huge reason to be concerned, unless you deliberately misrepresent your content to market to children.Last edited by DaBackpack; 11-22-2019, 04:41 PM.

They're gonna use machine learning, I promise you. That falls under good reasons to leave YouTube, given their track record.
Their algorithms are extremely good at what they're trained to do: make YouTube money and save their asses from legal or PR trouble. They straight-up do not give a shit about their content creators.
Capitalism, etc

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
I mean, I could switch my stuff to Facebook and get just as many views/make as much money as I ever have (zero bucks)
It's legit just seeing half the platform get wrecked and everyone basically having to abandoned ship that gets my goat.
you are absolutely right that we should have all gotten off YouTube a long time ago, so I guess when you stand in traffic you can't lay 100% of the blame on the car that's hitting you.Comment

Re: Who all is going to delete their youtube channel come Jan 1?
Well I mean, I'm not bringing these things up to rhetorically suggest that people leave YouTube or are stupid for not doing so; it's more for me to point the finger at YouTube instead of at COPPA. YouTube is the problem, they caused this. We need to hold them accountable.I mean, I could switch my stuff to Facebook and get just as many views/make as much money as I ever have (zero bucks)

Something that would be wonderful (but will never happen) is if prominent YouTubers unionized. Same with Uber and really any distributed "service" that builds fortunes off the backs of content creators or service-providers.
