It's not even just not recommended, it's flat out incorrect in what it's attempting to describe. Correcting its usage doesn't need to be made to sound like a matter of politeness or preference.

Intersex is fine and all but it's again another label I think isn't needed.
You don't know what you're talking about. Hermaphroditism is having male and female sex organs, which by no means describes all intersex people, and referring to your original post ("there are four genders"), it makes no sense as a term to use because having male and female sex organs isn't a gender.

I typed out an argument against this but I don't want to clutter the thread further.

To sum it up though: The words I chose were intentional, and our opinions on how to go about this are very different. That's fine. I think the way I stated is more effective at preventing bad outcomes, and it's a heavy compromise.

There's a bigger issue beyond the feelings of the individual, and there's a lot to take into account when addressing people. The way I handle it is that if you're kind enough to talk to me, and tell me what you prefer, I'll go with it. I'm not going to ask because that's as tacky and rude as asking a woman if she's pregnant. I will however thank you for telling me, and try my best to call you as you please.

Anyways thanks DRG for answering, it's always a fun conversation to see where people stand on this, because even if I disagree it's at least a good way to balance my opinion and sometimes change it.
