If you hold down on the pokeball before you throw it, a coloured circle appears inside the regular circle around the pokemon, and starts to move. If you then throw the pokeball in a way that lands inside the smaller circle, you have a better chance to not have it break free. The smaller the circle is if you still hit it, the less chance to break free it has (also you get extra xp)

People who care more about the team balance in the area than they do about which legendary bird represents it?

It would be super awesome if the game used the same region data they use on Ingress to see how many people around you are on each team, and then gave you some incentive bonus to pick the currently smallest team so as to make them all roughly even.
