Have you heard In Flames' first five albums?

    and https://rateyourmusic.com/customchar...one&countries=

As noname said, custom charts on RYM are extremely useful for getting into genres or the music of a specific country or year.

Definitely start by listening to Crimson by Edge of Sanity, basically the quintessential Melodic Death record. Then you want to branch out to either Be'lakor - Stone's Reach and Ìnsomnium - Above the Weeping World (which are more melody driven) or Dark Tranquility - Damage Done and the likes of In Flames (which are more riff driven).

Melodeath is the kind of genre that has been made more accessible throughout the years imo. You will have an easier time by starting straight with recent albums by Be'lakor, Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum or Noumena. Earlier melodeath bands (Edge of Sanity, At the Gates, Amorphis, Carcass, early-In Flames, early-Dark Tranquillity) have that rawer edge and are hard to get into if you're not a death metal fan.

Oh since I haven't contributed, if you end up liking The Contortionist, check out Exoplanet, it's their first album which is ridiculously heavy, but it's progressive/chill/ambient moments flow so well in and out of each other.

                    Two great death metal giants.

I'd also suggest the new Pope Francis record "Wake Up!". Brutal stuff.

Take a page from my book:
If I'm interested in a genre, I just look up big genre compilation mixes on YouTube.
I'm doing it looking for new music to step, you're looking for new music for listening, it's the same idea.
If you like a song you hear, pause the video and look for more by that artist.

Here's some 16 hours of melodeath to browse through:

If that's not enough you can also go by playlists on this guy's channel for another several hours:

I love his channel, it's where I found the band Craving, and some other bands too.
There's an equivalent UnknownPowerMetal channel that's also amazing.
