I suppose it's no different than how you would approach someone with a mental disorder like autism (and I don't mean this to insult anyone). An additional layer of sensitivity, understanding, patience, etc. should be shown due to the people affected by said disorder being unable function within the sociocultural norm of society. So in this case, the simple use of a different pronoun conveys that respect. It's difficult because sometimes the resulting asterisk this puts on a person makes any form of social equalizers seem artificial. I think it will be a long time before people with disorders/disabilities feel properly integrated, let alone agendered people. It's still quite difficult for instance for handicapped people to have adequate accessibility in most public places.

If someone is transgendered or agendered, especially if they are now passing full time as a gender different from their birth sex and/or have undergone sexual reassignment surgery, asking them 'what sex were you born' is pretty rude and prying, and may well make people pretty uncomfortable.

It's an honest question. But if someone isn't comfortable with sharing, they don't have to.

When it comes to discussions like these, I find "perceived tact" to be counterproductive. It keeps people afraid to ask simple questions which in turn, on a broad scale, only promotes ignorance. I think the discussions in this thread so far are fairly indicative of this.

Sometimes people feel the need to stand up for their moral beliefs and values which sometimes means sacrificing ones desires to do what they consider to be "right". You see this all the time when it comes to people boycotting certain products or stores.

For example, I refrain from shopping at our local Walgreen's because of their terrible business decision to FLY PEOPLE IN to construct the store which only makes the unemployment in the local construction industry even worse (I heard it's like 90% unemployment in that sector or something ridiculous). It's because of things like that that my stepdad was out of a job for almost a year. Sure I may very well like Walgreen's products but because of their actions, I refrain from supporting them.
