A little spoiler from my ep I've been working on lately. I had started the project some months back but ran into a bunch of garbage with my comp crashing and for a while I just wasn't motivated to work on anything. but I've since gotten some good work done on my first 2 tracks of the ep (5 tracks total) and this is the 2nd track on the ep. note this is the "instrumental" or "bed track" cause there will be vocals on this when I'm done.

edit: yeah, I am trying to go for a more organic type ep. basically, the kick drum was me dabbing the mic (with foam on it) against the palm of my hand and I think the clap was broken tin foil on an old plastic fudge box from publix and the more sharp metallic tension was me jingling my house keys on a chain and that general atmosphere of noise and crunch was me crumbling paper.

obviously these were all normalized compressed time stretched and a touch of distortion/limiting on them as well. the keys and paper crumbling tracks were left alone though, other than being normalized cause my cheesey comp mic has a weak signal

edit: I lied the keys have reverb on them :>

edit again: OH I forgot the hi hat was sampled from my tambourine

Drop doesn't fit in very well, mainly because it's not in the same key as everything else. One thing a lot of people don't realize about dubstep is that even the really dirty wubby ones like Skrillex have a melodic quality to it. They stay in the same key and base their wubs around that note. Try making a sort of melody with the bass, if you can hum the bass without it sounding off, then you should be good to go :P

Trying to get better at my dirty sound design. I think I'm successful.

There were parts in this where I could hardly hear your kick drum.

I know this is for sound design so maybe you would've done this if this was a full song but, sidechain sidechain sidechain!

to be honest I'm trying to get better at sidechaining by using less. I feel like a lot of sidechain can eat up a mix and ruins the vibe of the track.

Gotta find the perfect balance of compression, eqing and sidechaining when it comes to "dirty/heavy/whatever" basslines. There are ways of sidechaining things really sharply without it even being audible because the gap left by the sidechain is perfectly filled with drum sounds/whatever.
