I don't know about the other designs, but this design is not that good, so I think it's pretty shameless and harmful to try to cheat the competition like this, in multiple ways.
It can't be helped, though, since all competitions in this format are just a contest of cheating, but I'd think twice before doing something like this if Marissa were my daughter.

All contests like this are about popularity and not the actual design/person/whatever. Which is a shame to a degree, but only the people running it can change that.

There's a big clothes chain here called Next and they always run competitions like this for kid and adult models. In the end, some really 'ugly' Man won the Male competition to model or money because everyone on FB voted for him as a joke.

Honestly, they seem very limited in how much creativity they could have here. So I don't think that this contest was particularly meant to get someone to make a good design. I think it was mostly to get parents to spread the word of this contest, which might be some form of advertisement. So it's probably what they expected.
