If I do that then the initial pairings will be based off where your ladder rank is at and then you just go up the bracket like usual.

OR

The other option is that we have every one play everyone in a bo3 and then I place on bracket from there.

I'm trying my best to keep this as fair as possible I mean I don't want to put a rank 8 diamond VS a rank 100 Bronze first round. That'd just be silly.
Well, if you're going to put me on the spot...

I guess the most balanced would be something like... Group pool play then Bo5s. Top two advance, bottom two go into a losers bracket. So it's a double elimination tournament but the pool play at least helps sort out the skill initially.

The other alternative to this, is to just set up an ongoing league and just have weekly match ups for funsies and cast some premiere matches and eventually go into playoffs once we get more players.

I would go for multiple brackets only if we get upwards of 32 + players.

I just want to point out I took down Middie 3-1 today. Son.

Yeah yeah yeah, rub it in. We'll duke it out another time. By the way, I post replay packs online so heads up these games are in there. (Link: http://collectivestarcraft.enjin.com...-eddim-replays) (Mock me for missing an I go ahead.)

How big would the group pools be?

I reallllly like this idea over the other one. But if we do this, the problem is that I'd have no clue how the **** to run one of these leagues, so if someone here really wants to help with this, I'd be more than happy to give it a shot.
