I've been watching Japanese TV, and they keep saying 8.8, while most American sources seem to say 8.9 . I guess more accurate data will be available later - right now everyone's busy with the destruction.

It was upgraded from 7.9 to 8.8, then recently again to 8.9

This is now a Main Shock to a foreshock (7.2!) that happened 2 days ago and they're forecasting a high chance of another main shock redesignation (because the aftershocks were increasing in magnitude) for Japan within the next few days.

Ah I see. Thanks for the update. Apparently the waters are receding now in many places. Hopefully that isn't a buildup for another massive wave.

Well, not for a while, I mean, I guess they're expecting a possible larger quake a few days in the future. In which case it will have technically been a buildup for another massive wave.

Glad to hear that...

I would also start to be concerned for the smaller islands throughout Oceania... a lot of those are very low and very flat. An increase of only a meter or two could be enough to completely submerge them :/

At 1:38 you see to the right a man in a white car trying to drive away, though the water hits the road infront of him and he just stops and sits there awaiting his inevitable death.
