if the melody in question follows offbeat 16ths, then what's wrong with stepping them as what they are? I'm not sure if I really know what "yellow note symdrome" is, but I thought it was when you had yellow arrows instead of red or blue ones..........

Yes that is YNS is. The the judges auto reject it because of course, lots of yellow notes means that something is wrong in the syncing of your file.
