Re: Sex ed. in schools
In my opinion...
Just stop caring. Labeling a group of people is meaningless. There will always be debate over it no matter what anyone says, so, there really is no point in arguing this.

Labeling who as what? I don't understand. This thread is about sex ed in schools. Are you saying we should stop caring about that?C is for Charisma, it's why people think I'm great! I make my friends all laugh and smile and never want to hate!Comment

Re: Sex ed. in schools
I remember a long time ago I had some really bizarre ideas about how reproduction worked. When I was really young I saw condoms for sale at a boardwalk shop at the beach, and I asked my mom what they were. She explained very broadly that a condom was a rubber thing you put down there to block a woman from getting pregnant. Now... at this point I knew little to nothing about how babies were made, so I fit this information into my worldview in a strange way.
Somehow, I thought that a woman could get pregnant just by being in close proximity to a man, like he could fertilize her eggs through some kind of invisible radiation. XD So, you have to wear a condom (which I thought of as being a square sheet) at all times, to block the radiation. This is also what I thought the reason was for my dog needing to be neutered even though we had a fenced backyard.
When I found out how it really worked, I was substantially surprised (and grossed out :P ). And even for a long time afterwards, I didn't really realize that people ever did it for any reason other than procreation.♪~
Always Happy! Smile! Hello!
I like delicious things
I shoot eye beams at the things I hate and make them explode! (Yay!)
So Happy! Smile! Hello! It's a picnic every day
There's lots of happiness in my pocket
So let's play forever~Comment

Re: Sex ed. in schools
Oh right. Thanks.Originally posted by REDACTEDShe was talking about labeling people sluts.
My parents were that same way. I learned nothing from them. They had opportunities, but never took them any more than to say what was necessary.Originally posted by REDACTEDOverall, sex ed is necessary because of parents like mine who try to keep their children's minds "innocent." They've never brought up the topic of sex with me *ever* and I'm 17 now. If it wasn't for sex ed, all the information I would have obtained about sex would have come from friends and probably been largely inaccurate.
I feel like I've said this before on these forums but I'm not sure where, so forgive me if you've heard this story. When I got my period, I didn't know what it was because nobody had told me and I didn't know you were supposed to DO that. So I thought I was dying or had cancer or something. I tried to hide it for a few days but eventually I told my mom. She did nothing and said nothing more than "I thought this would happen soon so I bought you pads. Here's a pad and here's how you use it. Here's a bunch of them. Have fun." Okay, not in those words - actually, not in words at all (my mom is deaf) but you get the picture.
Also, when I had my first orgasm I thought it was cancer (I was so shocked that I didn't take any pleasure in it at all - I simply found it to be a really "weird feeling" and thought "that must be what cancer is"). It wasn't until I heard about an orgasm on - now this is funny - Seinfeld, that I realized what it was and that it was okay and "Hey, that kinda felt good didn't it.... hmmm let's try it again." And when I started to get pubic hair, I thought aliens had experimented on me. I didn't know you were supposed to get hair there.
Imagine my relief when it was all explained to me in sex ed!
Parents are useless sometimes.
Wow. Doesn't he realize kids are maturing earlier and earlier, and if parents don't talk to their kids about it, they end up believing really weird things?Originally posted by REDACTEDmy dad made a comment about he didn't think she should be taught this at that age (he ended up letting her take it anyway).C is for Charisma, it's why people think I'm great! Re: Sex ed. in schools
I think my mom tried once.
Some song by the Backstreet Boys came on the radio and the lyrics had the word "sexual" so she asked if I knew what it meant. But that was the end of the conversation right there.
Even after sex ed, I'm still clueless and I'm almost 21. Hooray for sheltered society!Comment

Hm. I guess my parents are the same, so it's not too unbelievable.Originally posted by REDACTEDMy parents honestly believe that sheltering us in this way is for our own good.
Man, I would be such an awesome parent... I keep having these fantasies of my kids bringing their friends over to ask questions about sex because their parents won't do it and I freaking rock at it. I also hope for my kids to know as much as they want to know as they get older, and when kids on the playground tell sex rumours, my kid's gonna correct them!!!
... it probably won't turn out like that
But I would still be awesome.

Re: Sex ed. in schools
I showed my health packets to my mom and she like freaked out and said we shouldn't learn this in school. Natural reaction for parents. Mine did talk about sex to me though, but the packets were about abuse, making it positive for both people, a "win-win situation" which she didn't like.my dad made a comment about he didn't think she should be taught this at that age (he ended up letting her take it anyway).Comment
