Because with other controllers you were forced to using two hands(unless your uber talented with massive hands). And each hand was equally important. Having to push the buttons with the right hand and having to move the analog stick with your left.
If anything I would say being right handed would be a handicap with conventional controllers because I think that the analog stick is the most important and hard to control thing on a controller, pushing buttons with your left hand doesn't seem too hard. But moving an analog stick I personnally think would be a lot easier with my right hand. It would be fun if they had of made controllers for both lefties and righties.
