As some of you may know, today is November the 5th. This means it's Guy Fawkes Day in the UK. What exactly is Guy Fawkes Day?
Guy Fawkes was a man who, in 1605, tried to destroy Parliament as it opened with a cart full of gunpowder below the building itself. It was this act of terrorism that was to spark a revolution and end the corrupt government of England as he knew it. Unfortunately, on November 5th, when he was down in the cellar ready to light the match, he was caught and then hanged. Today, many Brits celebrate his demise by burning or hanging Fawkes in effigy. I, on the other hand, celebrate him. He was a terrorist, yes, but he did so to throw off the chains of the oppressive government. Today is a day to remember, just because the government is how it is, it doesn't mean we can't change it or even get rid of it. There is always another option. And so I leave you with the children's rhyme: Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November, the gunpowder, the treason, the plot. I can think of no reason the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.
