Default TWG Guidance for New Players

Signing up for a Game

1) First, reply to the signups thread with this text with the .s removed:
Code:
[.twgv]In[./twgv]
2) Then, everyone will wait for the game to fill up with players. The host will start setting up the game after that. Feel free to help invite anybody you know of who may want to play.

3) It is recommended while you are waiting to tell the host what your Discord handle is so that they can add you. This way, they will be able to message you to let you know the game is starting if you do not check the forums all the time. They are also then set up to add you to the wolf chat or dead chat if/when applicable.

3a) Another thing you could do while you are waiting is make 5 total posts somewhere on the forum if you have not already, because if you do not, sometimes the auto-moderator of VBulletin may hide posts that you make that have web links in them. It is supposed to help as well if your account is at least a week old.

4) The host will send you a Role PM message on Flash Flash Revolution just before the game is due to start. You may access this in the top right from:

Or, you might see it under: Your Notifications > Unread Private Messages.

Examples of a Role PM message

5) Go look at the game thread to get started (generally this is a separate thread from the signups).

6) Be sure to check when the first day phase is ending so you do not miss out!

Playing the Game

Tip: How to vote

Simply type the following with the .s removed
Code:
[.twgv]Personyouwantedtovote[./twgv]
To remove the vote, you can also:
Code:
[.twgv]Unvote[./twgv]
Tip: Where to find helpful information

- The first posts by the host in the game thread summarise the most updated info on the game, such as what is known about the roles.
- TWG Rules: It is important to be familiar with these so you do not break them.
- TWG History Thread, TWG Turbo History Thread, Junior Werewolf Game History Thread - while these are not fully up to date, they do give an idea of what roles are most commonly used and may be considered balanced, if you are playing a game where all the roles are not revealed at the start. You can also ctrl+f people’s usernames, if you want to get an idea of how much they have played.
- FFR does not have a formal database for roles. You can look at the databases on MafiaScum or MafiaUniverse, or take a look at past TWG games that have the type of role or setup of interest.
- If you have questions, feel free to ask people, or you can ask the host if it is a private matter. Also, unless the game is marked as being a mystery game, the host is supposed to clarify mechanics publicly as per TWG rule 17:
The onus is on the host to explain the mechanics of the game, or provide the players with some way of understanding the mechanics, excepting mystery games. In the event that there is some serious kind of confusion, the host must clarify the mechanics publicly so long as they have not already done so.

Tip: Keep an eye on the deadlines

A classic error is to miss out on a part of a game because you did not know or forgot when the day or night is ending. Be sure to read up on this and set yourself a reminder if needed.

Tip: How to look at someone’s posts in isolation

This may be more useful later on in the game to try to look back at certain information. For example, you might want to review the messages of an eliminated player after their cardflip.

First, go to the TWG subforum. One way you can get there is by clicking on “The Werewolf Game” hyperlink above the name of a thread you are reading within it, such as the game thread.
Scroll down to the game thread but do not click to go into it. Instead, click the hyperlink that has the number of replies:

Click on the hyperlink of a particular person’s number of posts to get a search view of their posts in the game thread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Glossary

:00 good, :01 bad - Days have a deadline. The host will put this at the bottom of a vote count to clarify at what timestamp players will be in trouble if they post at. Do your best to make sure that you do not post past the allowed time frame.

Angleshooting - the act of attempting to determine some kind of information about the game through the wording/actions of the host. It is against rule 13c to do angleshooting.

Anonymous game - This is a game type where it is not public information who is actually playing in the game. The host provides hidden identities. Most TWG games are not anonymous. Anonymous games might have roles like an “identity wolf” that can kill people if they guess their identity, or a third-party (neutral killing) acquistioner that can kill people and take over their account.

Bastard game - This is a game type where the host can lie to you or include really unexpected elements. Generally, a bastard game is a more extreme version of a mystery game. Most TWG games are not bastard.

Blue - Term that generally refers to town-sided roles that have a special power, such as Seer or Innocent Child.

Bussing - Term used to describe when wolves/mafia make arguments against or vote for other wolves/mafia. It is short for 'throwing under the bus.' Typically, this is a strategy so that if one wolf is voted out, the others might be under less suspicion.

Cardflips - This refers to the information that the players get about the roles of players that are dead. If the host sets this to full, then the whole role name is revealed. If cardflips are colour-based, then only Green/Blue/Red would be revealed. Hosts might use unique settings for cardflips other than these and explain this in the signups.

Deathpost - Refers to a non-game relevant post that a dead player may make, such as a meme. TWG rule 11 permits one (1) deathpost to players eliminated during the night phase of the game.

Green - Term that generally refers to town-sided roles that are Vanilla and have no special powers.

KiTB - Knife in the Box occurs in cases where the day phase ends with 2 or more players being tied for the lynch. When this occurs, the host uses random.org to break the tie.

Insta - also known as instalynch. For most games, Insta is on and the day will automatically end early as soon as a majority of the living players have voted for the same person. (For example, with 8 alive, 4 votes is not enough to insta, but it is enough to insta with 7 alive.) Hosts can also run a game where Insta is off and the day will not end early.

Mystery game - Term used to describe games where not all the information about what the roles are is revealed at the start. Often, these may use more complicated roles and mechanics.

Nighttalk - This setting refers to whether players are allowed to post in the game thread during the Night phase. (In an OOTC and nighttalk game, nighttalk being on would also permit DMs.) Usually, hosts have the nighttalk setting off.

OOTC - Out of Thread Communications. For most games, OOTC is off and players communicate with each other in the game thread. Hosts can run a game where OOTC is on and everybody can send each other DMs. Please note that in non-OOTC games, specific roles can give you access to communicate outside of the thread with other roles. Wolves typically have their own wolf chat, and roles like masons, neighbours or neighbourisers can also allow access to an additional chat outside of the thread.

Parity - the term for when a scum faction has achieved an equal or greater number of members with the number of players in the game. Commonly, achieving parity is how a scum faction wins the game. Parity is considered to be in effect when nothing, excepting modkills, may prevent parity from being reached.

Phantoms - Short form of Phantom votes, which are a penalty for when you do not vote on a game day when nothing caused the day to end early (such as insta.) For most games, phantoms are off. If the host does turn Phantoms on, information for how much the penalty is can be found in the TWG rules.

Post Minimum - This refers to the minimum amount of posts you must make on a game day to avoid being replaced out of the game or modkilled. Often, this is set to 5 by the host, and often they would need to meet some criteria for being game relevant.

Red - Generally refers to roles that are sided with a scum faction (wolves/mafia).

Server Time - This is U.S. Central time. It is displayed in the top-right of the forum and so this is usually how deadline times for the game are expressed.

Turbos - These are shorter games that typically get run in-between the regular games. Usually, the deadlines for turbos would be 12 hour days and 12 hour nights, but the host might set phases at up to 24 hours instead.
