that last play is not even about risk, it's simply common sense: you don't pass the goddamn ball in the red zone (mind you, at the 2 yard line!?), behind in score with less than a minute to go. there's literally no discernible reason to ever do a pass play there.
Devil's advocate: a lot of pass plays take longer than what they had left on the game clock at the end of the first half. Taking the field goal there is arguably the percentage play in the same way that not throwing the ball at the end of the game is the percentage play.

Seahawks needed 4 points on their final drive; you must get into the end zone, and the defense knows that. Patriots should be putting just about everyone in the box on that play (leaving a receiver or tight end open), because nobody gets fancy enough to throw the ball when they're starting near the goal line with seconds left to play in the Super Bowl, right? ...Right?

The only thing I can say that I honestly believe is that the outcome shapes our perception of the playcall. ...The devil's advocate would be losing this argument pretty hard, though.
