Ok, hopefully by now you're all familier with the stupid ad on the McDonalds website with the guy looking at a hamburger and saying "I'd hit it". This is an article in the Toronto Star that I just read.
Code:
It's hard not to cheer when a huge company screws up royally... and in McDonald's case, they just whiffed huge with an online ad campaign. The ads, which appeared on sites like ESPN.com, worked off the tagline, "I'd hit it," which appeared alongside a happy and healthy young man, who happens to be eyeing a certain cheeseburger that - and I may be crazy here - does seem to be playing a little hard to get. (see adrants.com for a peek at the original ad, and good spoofs).
Now if you're not already laughing, let's ask I.D.'s walking Oxford English Dictionary, Garnet Fraser, for an explanation. "I believe the phrase originally stems from the term, 'I'd tap that,'" he advises. Giggling yet?
If not, here's the final word: McDonald's apparently wants us to have sex with its sandwiches - because that's the only thing the bit of slang "I'd hit it" means.
Now, McDonald's could have been weirdly funny had it just used the sogan for, say, apple pies. About three years too late, yes. But better late than making an inappropriate sexual reference to a hamburger, don't you think? Words to live by.
