I remember hearing that the creators wanted the sequel to be just as revolutionary, if not more so, as the first. For whatever reason, i dreamt up what the feature would be in Portal 2.
It wasn't too long after i finished portal that i had this dream, and i was thinking about the puzzles in my head while i was in bed, so even though the idea had flaws, it isn't too far fetched in reality. Think about the basics of Portal; you have a device that can alter the third dimension, so what else could you alter and make a new puzzle out of? Well, altering the fourth one of course. Of course, altering time isn't new, especially in video games, but if you blended both together, i see great potential for a puzzle game as mind blowing as the original. Your new portal gun will still be able to do its normal task of creating dimensional portals and transport between them, but as an addition, you would also be able to come out the other side of the portal in a different place and time. Just as you can see where you'll be by looking through the portal before you go through it, looking through the portal will also display what the place will look like or did look like at the preferred time. It's hard to imagine how this would be incorporated into a puzzle, especially considering the puzzles can be confusing enough in the constant present time, but i'm sure the smart people who made portal can come up with better puzzles than the dream i had: You're stuck in a portal-esque room almost identical to the garbage compacter in the original star wars. Although you have your handy portal gun, you can't go anywhere and the walls are slowly coming in to crush you. Luckily, your new feature allows you to appear somewhere else in the room at another point in time. Just blast a minute-into-the-future portal on the stationary wall to your side and one on the ceiling. As you can see by looking into the portal you made, by the time you've come out the other side of the portal, the walls will have already opened up again and you can then make your escape. I wish i could give you better details, like how you could control the time and a better puzzle, but i still like the idea. Iunno, let me know what you think. |
