I was thinking about my video card and why I get lag with certain conditions and a good framerate with others- basically big distances and shadows kill my framerate. So, I did a little bit of math to find out just why that happens.
My Radeon 9600 SE has quad pixel pipelines. They essentially (correct me if I'm wrong here) 'draw' each pixel on the screen. So, if I run UT2004 at 1152x864, my card must 'draw' 995,328 pixels every frame. That means each pixel pipeline is drawing 248,832 pixels every frame. That's insane. Then I thought, wait a second, that's not all, that's just for individual frames. If I average about 50 fps, that would mean that each second, my card would draw about 49,766,400 pixels, and each individual pixel pipeline would draw about 12,441,600 pixels. EACH. SECOND. That's insane. |
