I'm very conscious of this common truth, and I, for one, am also very skeptical to a majority of the "truths" of science. It's no more true to beleive the explanation of what atomic particles are and do, and how the earth came to be, than any religious theory. Science is what christianity used to be: the generally accepted theory. Now some people blend the two. I just accept there's some things we don't know, and can't reason, no matter how strong the need for an explanation may be.
