Coolest 2D Monster Attack Animation

I have a side view of a generic monster and want it to attack with a normal attack. What would look cool? I could make it step forward a couple pixels and then back a couple pixels, or I could rotate it, or whatever. I was thinking it'd be cool to have the monster jump forward and then step back but there's probably something better looking. Any suggestions?
