I don't understand it. I really don't. It's just Crush the Castle or Fragger but with birds and pigs.
And those games were based off of earlier games such as Worms, which itself was based off of the earlier Scorched Earth, and if you go further back you have GORILLAS.BAS and there may even be stuff before that. Basically, there is nothing original nor even noteworthy about Angry Birds and it isn't even as good as some of the earlier games it knocks off. So why the popularity? |

It's cheap, kills time, and easy to learn. Anybody and their kid can play it.

Pretty much. The signature bird/pig characters are the driving force for brand messaging, and because of its high playability (even for kids, which is huge), it's allowed the creators to expand exponentially.

Right place, right time.
That's how some of the most stupid things get popular.

You ask such a thing but there are other things like Justin Bieber ect out there and people love them
People will bandwagon to anything. Even if it is literal trash. |

I think play's a large part. For example, if you take any person that plays tetris a lot for example, I doubt you'd find tetris memorabilia or merchandise in their room. Why? Because Tetris doesn't have any characters one can relate to. The characters and their appearance, personality, and traits play a big part. Heck, lots of people like Angry Birds even if they haven't played the game just because they like the characters, lmfao.

Izzy pretty much covered it. The game is just simple, quick game to play on the go, and attracts all age groups. The same thing could be asked for pretty much anything. Why are games like Call of Duty so popular? It is no different then any other war shooter game out there from what I can tell. Why is MLP so popular? Its just another cartoon for little girls that has blown up into something popular by grown ass men such as yourself for some odd reason. It either takes those few people to make it something it isnt, leading it to blow up in popularity/turn into trends, or things just tend to attract a large amount of people. Dont see why it is such a big deal that it is popular.

1. The characters are cute
2. The graphics are bright and pretty 3. The level designs are interesting 4. It's very easy to play, and the mechanics are super intuitive. Aim bird. Launch bird. Tap again if your bird is a special type with a secondary move (split-bird, diving bird, bomb, etc) 5. The skill element has been effectively removed from the game. As long as you're launching shit in the generally-correct direction in the generally-correct order, you'll beat the level. There's a fair bit of luck involved due to pixel-kludging, which means less-skilled players have more opportunity to feel accomplishment for beating a level. 6. It's playable by users of all ages 7. It's free 8. It's heavily marketed and very marketable -- it's also easy to take the general IP and churn out different variants of the same game (different themes / types of birds / etc) Last edited by Reincarnate; 04-17-2013 at 05:15 PM.. |

'Why is MLP popular?' is a fine question. However, it is unrelated and offtopic to this thread. If you want to know and you're not willing to read through the hundreds of pages of the various MLP threads to find out (and I don't blame you -- that's a lot of pages!), you can make a separate thread about it and I'm sure plenty of people will answer.
Thank you all for your input. ![]() |

I can't think of any reasons as to why MLP is popular. It's beyond me.
