Tass: No, because going from one to the other is incredibly easy
Jon: The games are being cumulatively ranked. So if you get rank 1 on Velocity, you get 500 points. If you get rank 10 on the other, you get 500*(.99)^9 = 456 points there. In total for the round, you'd have 500+456 points out of a possible 1000

Rubix: then you should keep it at the initial question if it's so easy.

A little help on Mental Round 4, because I don't want people to flounder, so I'll give a little help to get you all started.
Bayes Rule = P(A|B) = The probability of A happening, GIVEN that B has happened Bayes Rule is defined as P(A|B) = P(A and B)/P(B) Example problem: I have 52 cards and I draw a card. The suit is black. What's the chance of it being an ace? P(Ace|Black suit) = P(Ace and Black suit)/P(Black suit) We must evaluate the numerator and denominator as STANDALONE EVENTS. Looking at *purely* P(Ace and Black suit) is simple -- how many black aces are there? Two. So that's 2/52. Looking at *purely* P(Black suit) is simple too -- 1/2. Half the deck is black. So P(Ace and Black suit)/P(Black suit) = (2/52)/(1/2) = 1/13 Also a useful rule to know. Say there are two vendors. One has a pickle and a burger, and the other has two pickles and three burgers. We pick a vendor at random and he gives us a random food item. What's P(we get a burger)? We can either get a burger from one vendor or the other. OR means we add probabilities. So P(we get a burger) = P(we get a burger from vendor 1) + P(we get a burger from vendor 2) So for Challenge #4, you want the probability of drawing a white given that it comes from a certain box. P(Ball coming from box 1 | Ball drawn is white) P(Ball coming from box 2 | Ball drawn is white) P(Ball coming from box 3 | Ball drawn is white) The answer is obviously the one with the largest probability here. Just because we know the ball drawn is white, we don't know which box it comes from.

oh bah. they could have easily gotten that from googling "bayes" and reading the wiki article.
definitely deserve bonus points after that. .

yeah. giving away such a hint is kinda stupid... it just makes the mental pointless.

Jon: Your answer's way off, so the hint may help you.
I think it's a necessary hint because nobody's actually solved it on their own yet except Fractal Monkey. Consider it a mercy hint, lol. The mentals are only going to get harder -- I'm not going to be so nice in the future, lol. Next round, I'm going to give some teeth to these challenges >:] Take advantage while you can!

I have to say, I didn't see Bayes until my last year of high school, and NEVER saw/used it again until this year, with the subject Medical Statistics (I study medicine). Half of all the students present had never heard of Bayes in high school.
Btw Rubix, I thought you were going to upload the xls file with updated scores yesterday? Not trying to push you or anything though... Oh and here's my Music Catch score for round 3: ![]() And the Velocity score for round 4: ![]()

WHat my answers way off?
I guess my 5 minute readthrough of wiki's article wasn't enough. Tass got it wrong too. thats some assurance. Time to read up on bayes.. I haven't touched conditional probability at all... never knew it existed... and Stat got taken out of the gr 12 curriculum this year, so I'm kinda clueless.

I think you need to get top 5 in the entire mode, not just one round, Sk8IT.

Okay, let's see here...I feel like keeping up with the FFR challenges, since I have some time and a chance at doing well in them.
Round 3: ![]() ![]() I'll pm the 1 million score challenge and the lowest score challenge once I feel I have done the best I can do on both of those. Round 4: I used the alternate swf because the blink mod creates a large amount of lag for me when using the main swf. It still lags afterwards when playing normally without the blink mod until I refresh the page. I don't think it's a trick with the eyes after seeing how there isn't lag with the alternate swf. Anyways, here's this for now. I'll try to AAA it. ![]() Edit: Nevermind. Lag still happens either way. ): Edit2: ![]() Last edited by HammyMcSquirrel; 06-7-2008 at 06:49 PM.. |
