Can you play Play Station 1 games on Play Station 3?

Yeah, I know. This is probably a stupid question, but I'm not so good when it comes to that technical stuff.

My friend is playing FF7 right now. From him I heard that you can only play some of the PS1 and PS2 games. But I'm not sure if he was just saying that or what. Google it.

What you should be playing on your ps3 is Stepmania or Touhou.

I'd rather have a list and know instead of thinking the game will play, being let down, then trying to make it work and most likely screwing up my system. :/

I explained what personally I would probably due if the disk didn't play and I didn't know about the certain cross-compatible games. I don't have much common sense to things sometimes, so I would quickly try to "fix" this problem but cause trouble.

Some games are fully compatible, some are compatible to a certain extent, and some just won't work. For example, on my PS3, MGS (metal gear solid) plays completely fine with no errors. FF7 and RE 2 and 3 have some graphical glitches (some textures don't show up). As for not working, I can't get Einhander to work! T_T Though, like the 360, the PS3 does have downloadable updates to fix some issues as well as making incompatible games compatible.

The 40GB PS3 (the only one you can buy in Europe and Japan) has zero backward compatibility.

That means you cannot buy the $400 PS3 if you intend to play PS2 or PS1 games.

The 40GB can still play PS1 games, just not PS2.

Squeek and Summer pretty much sums it up. It's the 80 GB I believe that has backward compatibility.

I'm talking about how PS3 has like 8000 different models. Some play some PS2 games. Some play all PS2 games. Some play zero PS2 games.

Xbox 360? There may be four versions now, but they all have the same backward compatibility with Xbox games. Wii? Only one version, but the backward compatibility is standard.

Reason to take out backwards compatibility was price chopping I believe.

Also, the Xbox 360 does not have 100% backwards compatibility with all xbox games.

Also, If i remember correctly the ps2 was the first system ever to introduce backwards compatibility. (Depending on when game boy color came out, but honestly even if it did come out before, can you really call it true backwards compatibility considering that all it did was just introduce colored pixels and remained basically the same system)

No, the messed-up logic is that every PS3 has a different backward compatibility list.

What's worse is that the one console that guarantees "no backward compatibility" actually has backward compatibility (or so summerschool says) with two generations ago.

Oh, and as you may recall, the differences in emulation of the PS2 games were significant enough that some games looked absolutely horrid on the PS3.

I have a friend that has NO backward compatibilty at all. I don't know which version he owns, but he was pretty pissed when he heard about this.

Squeek, emulation isn't easy or simple. It's just impossible to make some games work.
