![]() So Windows update decided it would be cool to glitch out somehow and replace parts of system32 with empty files, eventually resulting in a laptop with capabilities equivalent to a punch card reader accessible through command line.
After 12 hours of trying to diagnose and fix the issue via smartphone, it became obvious that the only way to fix this would be to reset the computer to factory settings, reinstall Windows, and then enjoy recovering files. tl;dr win 8 is really good at bricking a laptop |

![]() heyyy I just got a new laptop running win8. so far so bleh. to be fair I've messed with it for all of an hour.
the windows update bricking your computer thing just sounds like microsoft being incompetent though, right? I would guess that could happen with a different OS if they were to similarly botch an update. |

![]() Personally, I haven't run into any problems with win 8.1 yet (thank god).
I had it happen with Ubuntu a few years back. Thankfully I was dual-booting linux and windows, though.

![]() I love windows 8, maybe I'm in the minority though. It just feels like a better windows 7 to me..

![]() Beyond disabling the metro UI I can't think of anything about windows 8 that isn't as good or better than windows 7.

![]() So once you disable that new UI then what is the problem?

![]() I might be in the minority who actually likes metro but you can pretty much disable it entirely, and eliminate it all together practically with http://startisback.com/
Once you do that you have a better Windows 7. Only complaints I ever hear that are legitimate about Win8 is the UI. Billium's issue is quite irregular IMO Last edited by Wafles; 09-11-2014 at 10:33 PM.. |

![]() So basically you have to spend money on windows 8 to get it to be windows 7
Or you could just have gotten windows 7 in the first place, which is cheaper to get than windows 8 anyway and doesn't require a separate product for it to not be utter shit.
