Re: TikTok soon to be banned from U.S.?
Right? Which makes this whole thing super hypocritical. It's a joke that TikTok is even getting banned in the first place. Trump gets info from one source stating that being the case, and all of a sudden 'tech giants that process american data outside of america' is bad, and starts with the biggest.
Says a lot about what they don't pay attention to in their own country.Last edited by gold stinger; 09-18-2020, 06:30 PM.Comment

Re: TikTok soon to be banned from U.S.?
If anything, it just means Trump is throwing this kind of a fit. It's not even that big of an issue compared to the rest of the shit we've had to deal with in recent months. Personally, I can understand a number of reasons why the ban should take place, but like someone else pointed out on this thread, this is a very bad move.
As stated earlier, tension between the States and China is nothing new. That's been going on for the last few decades at least, possibly longer than that. What bothers me is why Trump to no one's surprise would ban this social media platform giant just because "it's based in China." On what grounds can he prove this? I can neither confirm nor deny that China is using data from the app from users who have downloaded it IN THE STATES, but this type of move is heavily redundant. Personally, I never had any interest in downloading TikTok ever, but I'd feel like a villain if I believed that no one else should either.
Because of this move, as you would expect, there's naturally going to be a massive public outcry about the move by younger people that use the app for whatever reason, whether to get a message across, sharing their life experiences, or just sharing random things that they think are funny/entertaining, which there's nothing wrong with. Once the ban is effectively in place - and no doubt Trump will push to make that a reality - one of two things will happen: People will either complain for a few weeks and then simmer down when ultimately a new, yet very similar app launches and start the whole chain over again, or worst case scenario, many people in the States will go into protest mode and like the George Floyd case, damages will occur everywhere like a huge city during a tornado that won't die down.
One thing I CAN promise though: There are going to be a lot of angry young people on social media ranting about why TikTok is no longer available for download in the US, and it's going to be one massive shit show I don't think anyone is ready for.Subscribe To My Channel!

Re: TikTok soon to be banned from U.S.?
Who isn't screaming in the US of A right now?
Older people are screaming because of Covid-19 being a very real threat to their livelihoods because of younger people believing it's not that bad.
Younger people are screaming because of police brutality nation-wide, and no real move to put something in place federal because of it.
Federal people are screaming because of election being a bloody shitshow, and their name and title could be on the line at any time, or massively lynched by the local community for not doing their job.
People with jobs are screaming because they are losing them at the fastest rate since the great depression, and need to keep food on the table and shelter available for their family.
People providing said food & shelter are screaming because global warming issues have reached an all-time high, and is ravaging farming land, and sprawling communities because people decide to have gender reveal parties.
I could continue this train forever. I pray that USA's next president is able to dig you guys out of this massive hole that took 4 years and a fair amount of ignorance to dig.Last edited by gold stinger; 09-18-2020, 07:36 PM.Comment

Re: TikTok soon to be banned from U.S.?
thanks for teh bump mister bot
turns out I'm a bit of a naive moron because the legislation behind the "tiktok ban" could potentially be akin to a patriot act v2 (imho the patriot act is one of the worst things the us has ever passed). vague and broad wording that generally targets services, not specific "threats," and could possibly apply to things such as vpns. it's a rushed piece of legislation curated by out of touch, tech-illiterate boomers. it has both bi-partisan support and bi-partisan criticism.tiktok ban is fine
the wechat ban is a bit more of a problem, since wechat is also used by millions of chinese-american citizens to keep in touch with people at home. a better way to go about doing this, if you want to increase economic tension, would be to just filter out wechat transactions at the processor gateway level
in one breath, we should take more of a solid stance against china in general, everyone should, but in another breath this doesn't seem like the best way to do it by far
