I just find it weird that someone who can appreciate earthbound despite all its flaws would hate on undertale.

Red dead redemption isn't fun immersive maybe but it's not fun. Too slow paced and really annoying that the npc's interactions can prevent you from taking a break by dynamically shoving 2 or 3 missions on you with just a simple visit to the camp.

Grinding is a bad mechanic in its entirety and should be shamed upon when it is part of the core game experience.

But grinding and leveling up gives me a sense of progression and accomplishment. I think it becomes a problem with modern games that reduce xp rates in favor of customers purchasing microtransactions to make things faster. A good balance of grinding in rpg's is welcome imo as long as it's not ridiculous to the point of you not being able to continue parts of the game and making you play tedious side missions before you can progress *cough* assassins creed *cough*

Never said leveling was an issue, but you got it kind of half right what I'm trying to get across.

The biggest ploy of my argument is grinding for essential equipment, party members, money, or just items in general in order to progress past a seemingly impassable barrier that blocks off a majority of the core game, is not a fun mechanic and can get highly repetitive and boring for even the most hardcore players. It can seem fun at first with the possible luck involved, and the rush of finally getting what you need. However, I find in my experience that everyone eventually topples and gives up in the end.

I think a much better suitable game style would be that for competitive multiplayer purposes, allow grinding. And for casual single player purposes, allow people to gain progress at a steady pace, infinitely. Have them together in the same game, but keep them separate.

If it's an RPG for example, assign PvP listed items that are applicable to multiplayer, with equipment stat rolls so the grind is always there, that drop both in multiplayer and single player (but more so in multiplayer). Include leaderboards and rankings so its competitive.

Assign PvE items that are only applicable to singleplayer, with equipment stat rolls that are forever scaling based on level and enemy level that also scales with your level, so the progression is always there, that drop in both modes (but more so in singleplayer).

the things that overlap between the games are things that are in 90% of jrpgs regardless

most korean MMOs specifically have a shitton of grinding because they can't supply content at a steady rate to keep players playing and looking out for new content. it's terrible, don't get me wrong, but if you truly do like the game it becomes a trivial point.

in singleplayer games however, there is an END to your game, so you shouldn't unreasonably pad game hours just to stall the player from reaching it. offer challenge, not mindless grinding to be able to finally advance.

Unless you're playing a traditional turn based JRPG like dragonquest then most of the game is all about the grind and difficulty. Games like DQ push you to grind and not just skip that content and coincidentally is found enjoyable by a big playerbase. Grind is good and can be fun as long as it's done in a balanced manner.

Earthbound is on another level, as arguably bad as the game is, u need to appreciate it for being one of the first rpgs in a unique, non magical fantasy setting, and for how ambitious it was

Alot of things in it are amazing concepts, like scrolling hp for example

I think this is part of the reason I like it so much. Sci-fi in RPGs is really underdone comparatively- it's always some kind of fantasy, whether it be eastern, western, or final

I would say it can be confusing at times (especially when the runaway 5 is involved) if you don't know exactly what to do, and the part where poo has to finish his training is absolutely brutal
but outside of that I dunno if I can think of anything that would make it as bad as undertale

My experience playing it the first time was really positive, despite the challenge and confusion at times. It felt all that much more rewarding to get through things.

I'd agree that it's overhyped and that the cult following isn't really justified.. Not sure why it happened, I think the fact that Nintendo released it and advertised the hell out of it to little success contributes to that tho

Like a game with great success never gets a cult following, it's largely due to it being "underrated"

Also I know it's irrelevant to the game itself but earthbound soundtrack is veryyyy good, the music inspired many artists tbh, I'm a big fan of starship amazing

Ok u got me, I'm an earthbound fanboi
