Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
jeez dude I specifically removed In The Cock and It Oats just so you wouldn't make fun of me
I didn't even like GP that much I just wanted to see what somebody else thinks. The other /mu/ albums were just off the top of my head. Fetch and Madvillainy are excellent, and I really like the two vaporwave albums I posted although I would expect newcomers to the genre to be extremely confused.

Added all the recommendations to the spreadsheet. If you have over 10 recommendations and you want me to switch albums between the "shortlist" and the "waitlist", just tell me. -looking at you crazyjayde-
I still don't know Arkuski or t-rogdor birthday, if you want me to review something for that date.Comment

Day Four - December 4th, 2013
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Entites by Pomegranate Tiger (recommended by Fission)
1. Gift of Tongues
2. Maxims
3. Stars
4. Drifting
5. New Breed
6. Mountains in the Sky
7. Not to See the Sun
8. Ocean - I. White Ship
9. Ocean - II. Maelstrom
10. Ocean - III. The Golden Portal
11. Sign of Ruin
12. Regenesis
Lots of noise in my room today so I had to put my headphones to listen to this album (contrary to the first three albums). I may have missed some subtilities on those past albums, I'll try to keep that in mind for my next reviews.
Pomegranate Tiger is a new formation from Canada formed by multi-instrumentalist Martin Andres. The name Pomegranate Tiger comes from a Salvador Dali painting. Entities is their first full-length album and becoming #1 best selling in the metal category on Bandcamp.
Production is alright, it sometimes feels a bit dry, maybe the music is lacking a bit of soul at parts. At moments, the drumming, rhythm, lead guitar and bass feel a bit distant to each other; it's lacking cohesion. And it's more evident when there's no other instrument playing. They do achieve a better cohesion live. And I really have to give credit to the bass player, he has some of the most complicated sections and he can pull them off very well. In fact, all of the members know their instrument, but the bass is quite stellar.
The songwriting is a bit confusing. They throw a lot of epic solos with barely no progression to it. It gave me the impression they tried to squeeze the maximum of ideas on that album. It suffers of having no recurring parts, as that would help distinguishing the songs. And as far as I can tell, they have a very similar sound to a lot of these new djent bands such as Scale the Summit or Periphery. It's very representative of the current progressive metal scene at the moment for sure.
Drifting isn't necessary. It's an overly complicated piano solo. Similar to Silhouette by Opeth but lacking a human presence. New Breed is one of the two longest songs, and features, at 4:35, an awesome short guitar solo followed by a Dream Theater-esque moment. One of the highlights. The small electronic-influenced parts in Mountains in the Sky are interesting and well incorporated in the music. The songwriting of the later half of the song is a bit lazy and would beneficiate of a clean up. Ocean - II. Maelstrom ends too abruptly. In fact the whole Ocean suite could work as one song. And the violins in Regenesis are absolutely gorgeous.
While reading myself again, I'm really nitpicky on the parts they can improve. After all it's their first LPs, it can't be perfect. Truth is, it was a very good listen overall. It's fast paced from start to finish and there's no boring parts. If they could clarify their sound, give a meaning to their music and forge their own personnality, they could produce a very good second release. I'm just hoping.
My rating : ★★★★★★★☆☆☆
