This is a very healthy motive. I normally never left school until my homework was done. Just so that when I got home I didn't have to worry about whether or not I did my work when I all I wanted to do was relax and hang out with friends.

This aswell. It's hard to focus on school, your social life, extra-curricular activities, and a fully fledged game with a demanding community.

It's always best to put this game in the rear-view mirror if you're having trouble in school. No one's going to hold a knife to your throat telling you to play haha.

Procrastination is weird because it depends on the situation.

I don't play Stepmania/FFR much now, and that is my main interest in terms of entertainment. Other people have a much bigger issue when they play something like League of Legends, where each game can take 20+ minutes. Since I haven't seen much improvement on spread over the years, I've stuck to some pad stepping and index to playtest/pass stuff. However there's a certain addiction I have that's very difficult to control, and I seriously doubt I could ever stop it. I talked to Byron and it turns out he had a similar issue back in the day, he just didn't take it to the extent of blood stains like I do.

Personal issues and depression can play an important part. Before classes started this semester I released quite possibly the most amount of anger I have ever released externally. I'm able to focus and keep track of my classes, but I have to recover from the anger; it keeps coming back.

For my experience with procrastination, many times it's when large assignments are given. A long reading assignment along with small text to read makes me incredibly livid, holy fuck -- back in high school I always wanted to take a shortcut whenever it came to reading stuff. Not understanding something in a big assignment is also rage-incuding. If you're assigned a group to work on a project, communication issues are by far the most important part. Just yesterday my group didn't contact me with any updates until a few hours before the class I had to present with them, so I wound up getting most of the ideas when I had trouble myself.

What I'd say is: go to class even if attendance isn't counted. Ask the teacher questions as soon as possible (office hours are good for this too), even though this isn't possible a lot of the time when assignments are due right after they're assigned. LOOK AT THE SYLLABUS FOR YOUR CLASSES. In my case, my teachers have listed what sections are going to be covered and what readings are going to be done. Getting ahead greatly reduces procrastination, and I've been making it a habit now to get my shit done ASAP. Even then, it's hard to keep up when you want to be involved in other activities.

tl;dr for me procrastination is a personal issue that stems from a lot of anger.

Procrastination has screwed my over so hard to the point where I failed 4 courses (a couple of them being prerequisites to a couple other courses) over my 2 years of being in college. You would think I would learn from that, but I still do it. My advice would be to try and do the personal planner idea that cedolad brought up.

Also in general it's good to think of deadlines as a minimum requirement. Deadlines are much closer than they appear. Two weeks for a project? That's almost nothing considering you have a chance of starting it two days before it's due.

Re: Procrastination and getting out of it

For math assignments in particular, I always try to do those questions related to already-taught material soon after I get the assignment. That way if issues arise, I have extra time to ask the professor about them rather than trying to do everything the night before, possibly getting confused, and then either staying up all night or just not finishing.

As a math major, this is my life. D:

I used to be (and still am in many ways) a chronic procrastinator, but eventually you get sick of rushing at the last minute (especially if you're causing damage / shortchanging yourself / failing / etc as a result).

Eventually you just have to slap yourself in the face: "You lazy shitwit. Stop fucking around. It isn't that hard. Just get it over with -- it'll take like 5 minutes and then you can piss the rest of the night away guilt-free."

Re: Procrastination and getting out of it

I'm in the thick of teacher's college right now and if it's any consolation, I've been consistently handing in assignments either last minute, days after the due date, or even in some cases, not at all. If my profs wanted to be dicks they could be failing me in some classes but it's pretty lenient (marks don't really matter you just have to pass (60%) to get certified).

Best advice that has worked for me in the past is forcing yourself to go to bed no later than midnight. Unless you can be productive with ~6 hours of sleep then go for it but I recommend setting an earlier bed-time. (I usually plan to wake up at 7ish)

Another thing you could try (which if you're a true procrastinator like me is impossible) is somehow change your priorities around so that school work comes first. I always said if I could find a way to treat school like a full-time job, I'd be an excellent student but for some reason I can't take it seriously

Quick update while I can. We're in the start of some pretty big projects as of right now and I've been holding a considerable lead on the majority of them since last post. I've been reading through all your posts and I'll say that every bit of input has helped me motivate myself (shame I don't have time to respond to each of you :P). Hope it might help other people though as I'm sure we can all relate to this topic.

By the way, I'll be literally living inside my college for the future months, there's a big workload ahead and the locals are open from 8 to 23 on week days. And I don't play FFR/SM much these days, but hell, it's always good to pop one or two songs on the school computer from time to time.

I used to procrastinate hardcore but I've developed the discipline to get my work done ahead of time. It saves me from a lot of unneeded stress.
I bring my math homework to church. It helps me find a higher power.

Checklists I think help a lot. It feels so good when you check something off ^_^ Thus, motivation to tackle the next task emerges from checking off the last task.

OH, and - as I reviewed Reincarnate's post - guilt. I felt so bad for not doing an assignment, or studying, so I just did it. Dat guilt.
