If Naruto wasn't full of fillers that obviously were made to promote specific life values rather than actually making the story move on, the anime may not have been too bad. While I have nothing specific against these episodes, it's another story when they're 90% of the show itself and you lose the feeling of progression in the story. It's no longer "what happens next?" but "are the fillers over yet?". Bleach seems to suffer the same fate and One Piece actually managed to keep things relatively interesting (I'm naming these two because they felt like they were the other 2 mainstream shonen animes airing at same time). As for the fan-base/cosplayers and general view from the outside, that's just marketing/bandwagon/hype(?) and there's not much that can be done about that.

The anime is average. I wouldn't suggest it unless you have a lot of time to kill.
