Personally, I believe that punishments should be dealt in accordance with whether or not the criminal in question made a conscious decision to do it, disregarding what is right or wrong. This would hold true regardless of age.

Now when I say "disregarding what is right or wrong," a lawyer could find quite a bit of leeway with that. What is right and what is wrong? Is self righteousness evident in my description? For the most part, yes, since I don't believe that all laws and all penalties are completely just. But animal abuse is simply cruel, and giving more extreme examples of cruelty doesn't change that fact.

I say "regardless of age" because age isn't necessarily the greatest factor for a person's maturity or intelligence. What's the difference between a 14 year old kid (who obviously isn't quite right in the head) who abused cats and a 40 year old man (who obviously wouldn't be quite right in the head) that abused cats? Unless you have some sort of mental disorder blurring the lines between what's fair and not for the community, where you arbitrarily do whatever you want with no accordance to other peoples' feelings because you honestly don't understand consequences, it isn't fair for a 14 year old kid who knows what he's doing to be charged differently.

Unfortunately, judging a person's actions like this is about as idealistic as Communism: It wouldn't work practically. You can't accurately base any punishments like this, as there would be no set precedent. And I can't quite vouch for this guy's maturity or intelligence. The punk did it to be cool on the internet - but as bad as that sounds, he isn't fully to blame. That blame partially falls on the internet society he was looking to appease by this sacrifice. And I won't deny that children are more subject to propaganda and peer pressure than adults are.


tl;dr: Not planning on signing it, but I hope the kid gets the maximum penalty because he knew damn well what he was doing at the time.

Kids should be tried as adults because the crimes are the same? Hell no. The person doing it has all to do. It is a proven fact that teens do not have the same mental capacity as adults. They do not function the same way. They do not think the same way. They do not rationalize the same way. Kid's brains are not as developed in the area of rationalizing between right and wrong, thus they are never tried as adults.

Seriously, if you're GENUINELY concerned about helping animals, there's a lot more you could be doing than "LOL I SIGNED A PETITION ON THE INTERNET SO ONE ANIMAL ABUSER GOT IN TROUBLE," a far better alternative would be volunteering at animal shelters and actually, actively assisting victims of animal abuse. CERTAINLY though this is far, far too much effort -- I mean you can't even tab over to FFR!

Sometimes I wonder though. If you are really against animal cruelty, then would ants not be just as prescious as cats? Yes cats are cute, but think about it like this. What if instead, ants were larger and everyone had pet ants, and cats were small and lived like ants do now. Just because cats are cute does not mean we should forget about ants. I mean come on guys, those ants are rocking. O_O, and the dust mites, what about cruelty to them? Well I guess it would suck to be an ant/dust mite then.

But yes, that kid was not very smart. And also, this story been traveling around my school. More people are talking about it, sadly none dude to FFR.

And I always thought your name was pronounced Poke-Le-Da. But now when I read it I see Poke-Elda. Or is is Pok-El-Da.
